A better defrag

Again, it doesn't affect game performance. ;) No matter how much the load times in HL2 suck, they still don't affect the performance once the level is loaded. And as far as load times are concerned, faster drives make the biggest difference as long as your fragmentation isn't extreme.

If you're having to hit the page file in-game, though, all bets are off.

And now on PErfectDisk. It seems to be broken for me- on 3rd day of trial every option is grayed out.[/QUOTE]

Did you select (click) on the partition that you want to defrag? That should un-grey everything.

I wish I had a stable enough Windows to ever get around to defragging - tend to have to reinstall every couple of months.

Count your blessings. :(

I don't know!

I mean, if I did know then I wouldn't have a problem, would I?

I have disabled PerfectDisk service, but even after turnin it on, no partitions or disks would show up.

Be sure that you're letting both services run. For whatever reason the scheduler service is required to run the program. FYI even if you set it to manual it will continue running (after you've closed PD) unless you stop it manually.

Then I'm not buying it- the software that requires three processes in order to perform one action.

Only the scheduler continues running. The engine shuts down when you close the program.

...and the other service keeps running too... it maybe has small memory footprint, but every process requires lots of OS resources to be set up and maintained.

Imagine that every piece of installed software adds up two processes at start up, how slow your computer will be.

I really don't get why it needs all that additional garbage. Developers obviously have yet to learn that we users don't have infinite memory and infinitely fast processors.

This is just my view and it represents insignificant number of computer users.

No, the engine service does not continue running. It takes several seconds for it to shut down, which maybe be deceiving you.

Nice little lecture on monitoring starup processes, but you've obviously never seen me do one of my startup witch-hunts.

Well, idea is you set up scheduler for times when the computer is turned on but you aren't watching it.

Think of it like maintenance on a car. It happens "behind the scenese" which is more than car maintenance.

If you will use a machine, you have to maintain it. Which doesn't necessarily include watching progress bars at all hours of the clock..

Some of us prefer doing it ourselves to having an extra process running.
