Emperor
So, lately I've been playing different games where I take a specific civ because of its UA or UB and try to exploit it to the maximum and see the results.
This time, I thought it would be fun if I played Theodora and took both religious texts and itinerant preachers as beliefs since the UA allows me to do it and see what happens.
The settings were Large, standard pace, a Frontier Pangaea map on Emperor. The map because it allowed extra space for the AI to found cities and Emperor because I find it to be more or less the most balanced difficulty level for playing CiV just for fun.
Also, I re-rolled a few times until I got a desert start because I wanted lots of faith to spam missionaries and spread my religion faster. And obviously, the point of this tactic is to benefit it through a follower belief, so I chose Tithe. My remaining belief was +2
for each world wonder which may have been a mistake, since I generated a ridiculous amount of faith from desert folklore anyway.
I played until I got to researching Radar, the I stopped because it was getting a bit difficult playing this map with my 3 year old laptop, there were over 130 cities on the map! Also, Germany was winning this game because I didn't play a specific strategy to win the game, I just wanted as many people following my religion as possible, without the use of force.
Here are the results:
And here's my spawn location (I spawned about 5 tiles to the northeast, but when I saw those four wheat tiles, I couldn't resist, It took me 3 turns to settle):
As you can see from the first screenshot, 122 cities are following my religion. Both Germany and Rome had no religions founded, so it was easy to spread mine and use their cities to generate an enormous amount of pressure. So much in fact that I converted Egypt's holy city to mine! I couldn't be bothered with the Incas to be honest.
From the same screenshot, you can see that I'm making 314 gold from religion, that means 1256 pops are following my very creatively-named The Force!. If I wasn't on a golden age, it would be my main source of income. Together with the Big Ben and that commercial social policy that allows you to buy stuff for 25% less gold, it means a free building every two turns.
Now, this was a test game, and I've made an incredible number of mistakes. I wasn't lucky with founding a pantheon fast so I had to build the Oracle. The I went for all great engineer point generating wonders, but missed out on the Pyramids. Also missed the Chitchen Itza because I was lagging behind on tech due to my poor management skills and tons of other mistakes. Still, it was fun to see my religion suffocating all others so easily.
It's definitely a strategy to pursue if you're playing Theodora on a large, or even huge map. If I had a monster PC, i would definitely try this out again on a huge map with lots of City States on Frontier. By the end, I could probably have more that 2k pops following my religion, probably netting me up to 600 gold per turn. It could also work with a wide strategy I imagine.
Thoughts?
P.S.
Don't mind the totally explored map even though I don't have satellites, I cheated with the reveal map option just to take the screenshots.
