Hi fellow Civers

I hope everyone is keeping well.

I had been playing Civ IV for a long time (after playing the game from v.I), then I managed to get myself a really cheap copy of v.V with all the DLCs, played that for awhile, absolutely loving it, then the same again - got a cheap copy of v.VI without any other content. Played it, enjoyed it, but decided that v.V with all the added content/mods included, was preferable to v.VI. So then back to Civ V.

The thing is, for reasons I won't get into here, for quite a number of years now my Civ playing has been flaky, to say the least. I would binge for days (and nights!) at a time, then go nowhere near it for months (sometimes years) at a time. Life - it's a funny old thing..... 😊
Hopefully those days are over and I can actually get stuck back into Civ and stay with it. Civilization has been part of my PC gaming life since 1991 - I remember opening up the box to the very first version and taking out that lovely, chunky ol' manual that came with it - a work of art within itself. I used to love those big fat MicroProse manuals - F19 Stealth Fighter anyone? The care and detail that went into them was incredible. It's great that we can go online now and find wiki's and forums, but I still miss those manuals.

I recently I discovered Reddit, and I have to say, I really think it's a great app. Of course I am aware of all the toxicity, but for the most part I manage to avoid it. For gaming or (in my case) if you play an instrument, there are some great subs (groups) on there. So, I joined a Civ V sub, and last weekend made quite a few posts asking for help. No problems there. But here's the thing - Civ V to me, is almost like I have just discovered it, especially since I have added some mods (which was all new to me). Things like InfoAddict almost make it a different game - the creator of that deserves a medal. So I made a couple of posts just out of sheer excitement, wanting to share my new experiences and just, you know, talk Civ V...!

But this is not allowed, apparently it is not the place for that, only for questions and reaching out for help. Now don't get me wrong, I haven't come on here to complain about them - that is the way it is, it is their prerogative, that's fine. I should add, there were plenty of people who really enjoyed my posts, but I did get called out on it with comments like "like Low-effort posts add nothing to the overall discussion of the game. All you've done here is tell a story about your experience of an extremely normal gameplay mechanic." and even "Dude, this isn't a chat room. It's great that you're enjoying the game, but you're just spamming the sub with this." (I didn't spam anything, we are talking about 2, maybe 3 posts in this manner). But thankfully most of the comments were things like "Love the energy. Reminds me of how I was obsessed with game coz its so comfortable and convenient to play anytime" and similar. But when a mod called me out, I thought nah, this is obviously not the place for me.

But then - and I almost feel like I should apologies - I remembered you guys. A forum I have been a member of since, I don't know, Civ III, maybe even before if it even existed then. I know there is a sub-forum on here specifically for guys like me who just want to come on and make a post about that exciting moment the Huns decided to attack, or the first time I had ever built a Longbowman - you know the sort of thing, when you just want to share your excitement and enjoyment of the game, in the moment.

So, which of the Civ V forums is the one made just for that? Is it 'Stories & Let's Play'.....? I wanna share my fun, that's all I want to do - is that so bad?

Thanks in advance guys, excuse the long-ass post - I did my Pitman's Typing qualification years back, so something like this took me about 5 minutes to type!!

David 😊👍

you can post here, though it's not as active as the civ5 subreddits

which sub were you posting in? there's one for the entire franchise. and one for just civ5, I've sporadically posted in the latter screenshots of 'look-what-happened-in-my-game' variety, and I've never been scolded once

Those old manuals were awesome. I was cleaning out my closets just a couple weeks ago and came across the old Civ 2 Tech Tree poster!

As for which forum is made to share fun I'd say here in the General Discussions (there's a funny screenshots mega thread if you come across any funny business) or yes the Stories&Lets Plays (although S&LP is less frequented). Also if you like playing shared games there is the Game of the Month section (on hiatus right now because of the server update but will come back at some point, hopefully).

The Strategy & Tips forum is often busy; there are shared games in there where you can play the same shared save file as others and post about the game. (I'll shamelessly put a plug for a thread I recently started there to share Immortal games, talk about it and compare notes: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/shared-immortal-game-series-thread.698926/ ,come join us).
