We all looked forward to seven with anticipation. And, lo and behold, the pesky workers were gone. We didn’t have to shift our attention to the lowest level of administration, while working on the highest, strategical level.
So, happily we played further. The rulers and the nations were a mess, but most of us didn’t bother.
There is a question, though; Why do we find Harriet Tubman here, among all the famous emperors and kings and queens?
Anyway, that doesn’t matter. What matters is that we soon hit the settlement limit. One settlement above the limit, and we are punished.
That means, if we get into a war, we must closely watch our settlement limit. If we have reached maximum with our settlers, a new city or settlement means punishment. And if we destroy the settlement we have concurred, there is a punishment for that too.
And some extras punishment if you eliminate a nation in the game.
But the worst punishment is the change of age. If we have built a society to stand the test of time, most of it is gone after the age change.
And there is more. I experienced how my four army commanders (with a total of 16 troops) almost were wiped out when attacking a two-settlement nation. This nation should have had 2 modern archers. Instead, I was attacked with cavalry from all directions. And there were no hostile army commanders who had survived the change of age.
The game worked well in the beginning. Then one update made it slower, both to initiate and to play. Then another update crashed the game. I couldn’t play it before I read about how to solve the problem by disconnecting from the net.
Initially it was possible to turn off the crisis by checking one box. One update gave us six.
As I see it, the game is now concentrated around avoiding punishments. The gamers are corralled by limitations all the time, and that shapes gameplay.
I have read that it is impossible to get rid of the change of ages because it is in reality three different games. If that had been doable, and all the limitations were cancelled, Civ 7 would have been a nice game.
One could hope, but I do not, that the game could be reshaped by the creators to avoid the issues I have mentioned, because there is a new ideology behind the creation of this game.
