A new "ideological tech tree"

In civ II you might go to a democratic government but you also might not because of the senate while in civ III there is no contest, you go democratic because it is the best government. I am not saying bring back the senate but these and other choices do need to be balanced out to give the choices real meaning.

Yes, yes, and yes. I think we're in agreement. I'd like to see a Civ 4 with genuine choices and alternate strategies, rather than making the game a really damn long (18 hour) race ... that is usually decided in the first 2 hours of the game.

I admit that the system I proposed wasn't perfect-I was just really putting some ideas out there ;)!

My big issue is, there should be some potentially unforseen consequences for 'overmanipulation' of people. This is why I like the idea of 'ideological techs', but would prefer to see them as spontaneous developments.

For instance, you develop the corporation, which allows you to increase 'Privatism' (sorry, lame title, but best I could think of  !) to around +7 or +8. Now, this will increase the general levels of wealth within your cities and there is a chance that "Laissez Faire' Capitalism might be spontaneously Develop-though what positive/negative effects would have I'm not sure.

Better examples might be setting Militarism very high. If you leave it at a high setting for too long, you might get 'Militancy' developing. The plus is that you get 'War Happiness', but the downside is that your will be UNHAPPY when you stay too long in peace! If you set Secularism too low, for too long, you might get an outbreak of 'Religious Fanaticism'. Again, this will give you some positives, but will also have negatives.
Anyway, just some ideas. Like DH_Epic says, I'm not trying to get too bogged down on the details right now, just throwing around my thoughts and seeing what takes hold ;)!

Yours,
Aussie_Lurker.

*bump*

Haha. There's so much that could be explored with this system, some time soon I'm gonna come up with more ideologies that coul develop....hmmmm
