Instead of linking the Icons, such as the warrior, phalanx & archer to how many times that you post, why not link them to your current ladder standing ? That will give people an incentive to play ( other people ) & some ( small ) reward for doing so.

Moderators too ! Tho they should probably have some insignia to indicate their status.

What does everybody think of this ?

Um, that's not a terrible idea. But I really think that the ladder should be kept seperate from the forums. That wouldn't be very fair to our Chieftan/Warlord level friends who have good things to say.

I'm expecting TF to send this over to Site Feedback any second now...

Maybe a combination of the two would be a better idea...that way it would be fair to all those who have been posting since the start of the site. Point system would be preferable...# of post = x, position in the ladder = y and then add the two to get a total and that could determine your icon. Just an idea.....

What if you don't have time or desire to play ladder?
Maybe you don't own the MGE version..

Multiplay is a small part of the Civ world.

Hmmm, 2 moderators against this idea... I wonder why

. Anyway I don't think it should be your icon but why not say your trade arrows instead?

Well, it must be close to the Armageddon. Lord, you know that I won’t fly by that lesson you taught me, to pull out my Wesson you brought me, and i’m not stressin’ it softly. Get ‘em up off me, ‘cause all we wanted harmony, been bombin’ ‘em. Yell up outta my ghetto, “I won’t settle,” get on my level.

Ok.... now that I have your ( the moderators ) attention.... how about "wondering" over to the ladder general discussion area & commenting on the thread that I started on the Club Current Situation.

I agree that the Civ World is more than MP play... etc. That said, it is my impression the MP side of things is pretty nominal compared to the rest. Playing the AI is where all the "perfect plans" & the "I am God cause I play at Diety" comes from.

I make no secret of the fact that I am going to push for & promote MP play as much as I can... both inside of & outside of the club. Giving my druthers I would like to see most of it done on the inside. My computer could blow up tomorrow or any number of other things could happen.

However... if it is to be inside the club.. I can't be working in isolation & hope to achieve much that lasts.

Bad idea! I'm not a multiplayer civer because I don't have a modern version. I posted a lot to get an archer status, and I don't want that taken away from me. It's a status symbol, and one that only three other people have (Stormerne, C of H, and lefty).

Well, I think things are fine the way they are...However, I must say that enthusiasm for MP should always be rewarded...

There are a larger portion of players that do not MP, since if I remember right, there were a large number of Classic Civ II players in one of the polls.

As a player who does not play Multi-Player games; but who respects those that do ...

In reading the posts in the CivFanatics Forum, it becomes more and more apparent that multi-player Civ is decidedly different than single-player Civ. While this is obvious, there are plenty of us out there like me -- according to the CivFanatic Poll, about a 50/50 split -- who just don't have the time-frame required to play multiplayer.
Linking icons to ladder standings is a very problematic proposition; at present, I do not have the time to play multi-player ... But, on the other hand, if the icons could distinguish those that predominately play multi-player from those, like myself, that play solo ... well ... then I wouldn't have to worry about giving my advise in the "Strategy and Tips" forum with the cavaet of being "non-multiplayer." After all, single-player versus multi-player are, in effect, two very different games; an "icon" indicator of which way you play the classic game of Civilization II is not that bad of an idea.

Bad idea. Though the posting paradigm is theoretically open to abuse, in practice it reflects those people who most make a contribution to this site. So I say keep the status quo.

Game of the Month. Ring any bells? The reason I suggested GOTM in the first place was to provide an alternative to the MP ladder. People wanted a way of evaluating the best players, possibly via the ladder. But GOTM seemed to me to be the obvious alternative for those who have to fit Civ into their lives rather than for those who have the luxury of fitting their lives into Civ.

By all means reward the best ladder players. We're going to do that for GOTM too. But the posting icons reflect your contribution to the site, and I think we need to keep a way of doing that.

It's not broken. Let's not fix it.

Some good posts here... gives me a clearer picture of what is going on. I have really only been "effectively" online since October so I have not grown up with the system as is, like some of you. I am terrifically tired right now & will address some of the comments later.

My time is limited too !

UMMMM i would agree if all i did was play MP all the time, but the fact is i don't infact i have it but never use it. I don't have the time. This line is used by my whole family and we have to iternet accessible computers I only get about a half an hour.

Beside i work very hard to become a phalanx, its a statisfying feeling to make over a hundred posts.

I like the status quo. I too work for a living, and can't play MP since I don't have MPGE

Curious, There seem to be alot of people very concerned with their icons. Fine, I'm not going to take that away from them, I on the other hand couldn't care less about a picture. I can tell you, that the only reason I found this site was to find multiplayer games, and even that was after I bumbled unknowingly into the MGE Zone where the moderator there was patient enough to explain to me that there were different versions of Civ2. After finding this site and following the multiplayer links even then I found it difficult to find a game. I know I can't be the only player to go through that, I think on the site all registered users should be required to enter a version and play preference, and the site's user lists organized by that criterea. I think that not a lot of people have the patience to go through all the different obstacles I crossed just to play my first game, and as a result they probably lost interest, never returned to he site, and shorted me another player in the game. MP is why this board exists to me, and speaking as a person who is bored playing the machine and desires the challenge of the human factor, I think this site should, if not be geared towards it, at least make it easy as possible for my potential opponents eagerly seeking a challenge to find me.
