AA war, and...

Question (trying to stay on topic here): what do would you do if you end up next to either the Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, or the Dutch? Wouldn't the excellent defensice qualities hamper any attack on their empires?
Dutch aren't any problem in an AA war. As for the Romans, pillage their iron if you can.

Even Alex and Hannibal can be taken out too. You just need more units.

I believe it would, which would be reason to bring an extra large crew and/or a few more cats to the party :nuke: and cut off their resources so that there will be no new ones to worry about when you've destroyed what UU they have.

Additionals: Personally I think the the reload thing would make it easier somewhat to win higher difficulties, but then for me the fun is in coping and adapting my gameplay to the circumstances thrust to my face. Playing safe like that sort of takes the triumphant fun you get when you achieve what you want (for me, at least). And it doesn't help on improving playing skills as others have mentioned.

The beauty of this strategy is that you don't need to build any military units, allowing you to put your resources into more useful things, such as colloseums and Coastal Fortresses.

I understand that some people prefer to be more purist, and try to beat Deity and Sid on a randomly generated map, but that is just their personal preference.

I hope my post contributed to giving people new and creative ways to beat Deity and Sid level AI.

Hey, I'll nominate this for the War Academy, MAS!

Wow, i get sick for a few days and miss one heck of a party.

Okay i would like to remind everyone i play vanilla. I have never seen nor heard of any leader other than military. I do not like to exploit the game so no Reloads.

THat said. The game i was playing i forfeit. I had India lined up not to far.
I finally did crush them about 1500bc, however they sprang up on the other end of the continent with 2 other civs. why did i forfeit? I was at a loss, i had just switched to republic but i also am still learning city placement and i screwed that up.

New game. Iroguois were nearby and i built 10 hoursemen and smashed them.
i wanna say around 1000bc. nor i have been invaded by russia from the south. it's about 300 bc and i have Knights. I am in republic and have gotten the aztecs to delcare war on russia as well from their backside.

Back to the original post. Basically I wondered what was required to take a city from the A.I? Do i need 10 horsemen? or what? I guess being inexperience in this version has left me without the confidence to go and take a civilization in one shot. I do not want to have to get into a war and then fail and scramble to make a new army.

FYI i play as the americans.

I like to have enough force to pretty much guarantee victory 19 times out of 20. It depends a lot on the target and the level. At Warlord/regent four or five horses should be enough against a flatlands town. Against a hill capital city, around eight. A bit less if using swords (perhaps 3 and 6).

Don't forget to check with your military adviser. If you are weak against the enemy, beef up your forces a bit more (but don't be afraid to attack either). If you are strong, that may well mean that the cities are almost empty. Go for it!

Depends on what the AI has. Give us a little more info:
  • What strategic resources do you have?
  • What techs do you have?
  • What techs & resources does the AI have?
  • How far away are they?

On a different note, this is a gamble I sometimes use if no AIs start near me, I get The Wheel early and have good productive cities:

I build some horses, and go to the nearest AI. I attack their settlers, but do not engage anything else.Kinda like a hit-and-run thing. When their army shows up near my borders, sue for peace. Rinse and repeat with others, unless they can get to you quickly. Hampers them a bit, sometimes a little gold and techs. Doesn't always work though, it is after all a gamble
