How quick question I got a ton of fantasy music I listen to while I play games. When I played Oblivion I was able to just drop them into a folder and call it a day.

Is it the same for fall from heaven? Do I drop the music I want to listen to into the appropiate themed folder and it will just play? Or do I have to edit a play list file or something?

You can set the game to play music from a certain directory of your choice instead of the ordinary game music, it is done under Options/Audio.

Hmm interesting, but then it wouldnt play based on theme would it? I got music that fits many themes, like the Fellowship of Leaves or Ashen Veil. If I have it play from a directory it will just play everything I have in there, regardless of whats going on in the game.

You should make your audio a mod mod, and set the new audio for each section so we can all enjoy your fantasy music :)

That's why I have several folders of music, based on whether I'm at peace, at war, totally screwed, or about to bang the last nail in my foe's coffin. I suppose you could do the same for music based on religion, and change manually to that religion's music. I advice making a folder in the BTS folder, and putting all the music folders in that one, for quick access. It's a pain, but quick and easily changed, especially if you have a large number of songs.

Good Idea!

However,

I'm not sure how to mod a mod. :(

I have around 4,000 Fantasy Flavored MP3s from Heroes of Might and Magic 2 to Oblivion and everything inbetween....

I'm not sure what is copyrighted and what I can give away.

Otherwise I would totally share my music with you guys!

Hmmm okay so its not as easy as me just dropping new music into my music folders and the game just playing it at random then?

Cut them all down by half size, and then they are fair use? :)

(Note, I have no idea if that's true.)

If you mean make the game engine doing it without using the "Custom Music Folder" option, it's mostly dull. A lot of copying, pasting, and replacing. Might be faster with an actual XML editor, as opposed to Notepad.

I'm also curious on this question. Does anyone know the official rules for sharing parts of songs? I've been editing a few bits to replace diplomacy music for a couple civs and I was thinking about sharing the results, but...

Hmmm Well I think most of the Heroes of Might and Magic music is free to use. From the series from 1 to 4. Its perfect and fits this game nicely. I would still like to figure out a way to add it into the game so I can keep the pre-existing music in as well.

All of the song is copyrighted. Fair use covers things like presenting a sample in order to review the piece. If you are not a blogger, news reporter or other media outlet, it's very hard to fall under the fair use banner.

Thus, distributing only half of a song is still copyright violation.

How hard would it be for you to contact the company and ask for permission?

I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice.

Yeah, I was hoping it might fall under the same guidelines as sampling (in music), but the bits I'm selecting are otherwise unmodified, so its not really the same. What did the team have to do to get permission for the Cirque and Arcana music? How short would something have to be to be considered "safe"?

Some of the bits I've been working with are from Dead Can Dance and one from The Last Temptation of Christ soundtrack. I'm guessing that jumping through the hoops would be a huge headache. Anyone have any practical experience to share?

It would be nice to add more sound files for units as well. I love playing Losha Valas because of the voice samples attached to her. The voice is [wiki]Grey DeLisle[/wiki] by the way, who has done a lot of voice acting for both video games (baldur's gate, etc.) and animation (avatar: the last airbender, etc.).

Well, and take this as you will, generally you do not get in trouble for using copyrighted materials in small numbers. Some artists will give permission and some will never email you back. However, usually if you are using something copyrighted, they usually contact you and ask you to remove first. Before the laywer machine gets rolling.
