My friend and I love civ. theres just one problem, we suck royally! WE have always played chieftan and the farthest I have gotten is Satallites(for him flight) I was just wondering how do u people advance so fast. I cant even dream of having rifleman in 1600(I have seen that somewhere) So, I was wondering if if some of u could teach me the mechanics of the game. Thanks!

Well, I, too, majorly suck at playing, but I found the war academy to be a good place to start becoming better. Also the strategy&tips section of the forum is a good source for tips on how to improve your gamplay.
Other than that... keep playing. :)

mcsniper, the main reason you haven't advanced past satellites on chieftain is that the AI is so crippled at this level that it can't help you speed the pace. My suggestion is that you move up to warlord immediately, get the hang of it in a few games, and then quickly advance to regent. This is the level where the AI has no handicap, and where the game begins to move at a pace that allows you to more fully enjoy it. (Note that I'm not saying the higher the better - more that the first two levels are basically training games.)

A couple of pointers for improved play for beginners:

1) grab land fast...keep building settlers and advancing them out as far as they can go until you run into another civ...then build your cities backwards from there...your culture will develop and fill in the gaps...

2) build granaries and temples ASAP...build up your population...irrigate everywhere until you get to the middle ages...then build mines

3) roads everywhere...build them between your cities immediately

4) luxuries...buy them, trade for them, take them by conquest...whatever you do, get them!

5) positive cash flow...until you get beyond monarch when you need to adjust the luxury slider...keep it at 0 and science around 40-60%...keep your treasury maxed out as long as possible early in the game...your going to need to build a nest egg so that later on you can turn up the luxury slider when needed.

In a nutshell....territory and population should be your early priorities...

Also remember that at higher levels, the AI smells weakness and unless you keep a strong (garrisoned) millitary presence...they'll jump on you!

And also start on Warlord...I agree with Txurce, your play will improve with stronger opponents.

The articles in War Academy and elsewhere are key...READ THEM and I guarantee improved play!

Good luck, everybody improves the more games played

Hey mcsniper, see my post in your other thread. There is even a save file for a Chieftain level space victory linked to it. But, do take Txurce's advice and move on up to Warlord, you'll still have an advantage.

Thanks guys. Ill try a game tonight and ill reply. Oh yeah and thank u dojo. I forgot I had that post.

Well im playing Egypt in warlord and im in N. America (standard world). I have basically the whole west side of the map. But, there are several of those pointless one city settlements. Man those piss me off. I have 1 turn left for medicine and its the year 1800 something. Tell me if u think im doing good.

What do you mean by "there are several of those pointless one city settlements." Whose settlements are they?

If you want a thorough review, upload a save file so someone can take a look at your saved game. Use the upload feature at the bottom of any CFC forum page.

Ya know those cities that are put in the smallest gap between the borders when you're try to control a solid continent. Oh and im not gonna upload my game, i always hate doing stuff like that.

The only way to become better is to reach for a level you are as of yet uncapable of :). Keep playing on Warlord, and keep getting your head handed to you. It can be a painful process, but you'll get better just from trial and error.

Ok i played my first regent game w/ egypt. I have my science at about 90%. Im preety far along but the othe civs are just cranking out tecs 10x faster than me. What's going on. The only way i could trade is lower my science to 10% and w/ the gold trade for a tech. Please help. And do u guys usually use the ring city placement w/ the AI? What unit do wait for if any before starting your first war(ex. going to war once you get knights).:wallbash:

Lowering the science rate and purchasing techs is a very common, and useful, method to use. However, a point arrives where your infrastructure coupled w/ a democractic form of government will easily out pace the AI civs. So, once you've bought you're way, or bullied your way, to tech parity, try taking over the tech lead yourself. Some short, specific goal wars can bring you techs at the negotiation table.

I don't use RCP, mainly because it hurts my brain trying to figure it out. Okay, I can, but its a bit of an exploit. In fact in C3C, its been "fixed." But, there now seems to bea negative side-effect in C3C due to this fix that will be addressed in C3C's first patch. Most likely.

Re: tech research rate, the more cities you have the better your tech rate, for the most part. Take home message, expand quickly, through peace or aggression.

As dojoboy said, expansion is the surest way to speed your tech pace. Build roads, especially on river squares, and then have your city workers making use of tese developed tiles, as they'll produce extra gold (and beakers). The max out your tech slider as much as possible. There is no reason for the AI to research faster than you at regent level, unless you are notably smaller. But you could try researching what the AI tends to avoid, and then trade to catch up and rake in some gold at the same time. In the ancient age, this often means mysticism, math and polytheism. In the next two eras, stick with the lowest branch of the tech tree - the ones that take you to gunpowder and scientific method, for example.
