Right, I've had this game for a few days now, but, I can never seem to win, or make my cities production high.

I've provided a link to my saved game for you all to comment on if you will, advice, tips?

Thanks?

I've also stopped 'automating' my workers, and I'm irrigating more than mining, as most of you recommend.

Also, how do I create armies? and, How do I trade via Sea?

Why would you irrigate more than mining? It all depends on the situation.

Armies are created by leaders in a city, and press "B".

Sea trade is done through harbors. Build a harbor and hope the AI has built one too.

Armies can be created by having a MGL( Military Great Leader). When you have an elitle win a battle there is a chance that you will get a MGL. Also, with the Military Academy you can build an army unit.

Astronomy is the tech that enables trading over Sea. Also, both Civs must have a cleared path to cities with Harbors.

Ah, Thanks.

Tomoyo, I mean I've focused more on irrigating rather mining, also, is it right that I mine mountain, and irrigate plains/deserts/flat ground?

Also, it seems that where I can't irrigate, I mine it, but then I can irrigate it? It just seems like a waste of time.

Early in the game it's better to just irrigate plains and any grass with a food bonuses, a cow or wheat, and mine other grassland squares, that will help with your production. Deserts are best left until later in the game when railroads will make them worth irrigating or later resources, such as saltpetre or oil, may make them worth mining.

Please don't take any of this harshly... but you need more cities!!! After a quick glance at your game, I see potentially more cities in just your core region. There is A LOT of tiles in your territory that are not being used by any city. This is a reason why your cities are not producing optimal spt. Another reason is that you are still in despoticism. I see Carthage has a monopoly as far with monarchy, and he is willing to take all your gold and +3gpt to give it to you. I would rather research a gov't myself. Switch as soon as possible.

I see a lot of problems in the MM department with your workers. I see grassland tiles irrigated... That's a big :nono: under despoticism. General rule to go for now as you're learning is to mine the grasslands, irrigate the plains.
You can not get more than 2 food or 2 shields from any tile after improvements that lack res/lux/food bonuses until you transition out of despoticism.

There's a lot to be done for in this game. I have no idea what your long term goals are, but the immediate future requires you to get into some form of gov't other than despoticism. The Germanic people demand a release from their oppression!
