When a Civ is afraid of your empire what effects does it have ingame? Does their trading rates change? Are they more/less likely to declare war on you? Will they give it more quickly? Anybody know?

I honestly don't know, Monty was afraid of me once but i have no idea why, my military advisor told me he had an army that could wipe me out, perhaps he was afraid of my razor sharp wit :D

Bumping in the hope someone knows what the actual effects of the "afraid" mechanic are.

never seen anyone afraid of me. is it in the same place that it says if they are hostile?

Yes. Also they will come on the screen saying something like "Oh great leader, please have mercy on those that are less powerful than you." or something along those lines.

It only happens on low difficulty settings (up to prince? not sure)

I only saw it when playtesting my mod, was pretty astonished. Beats me what it means, though.

No, it happens on Immortal too. I think if you attack an AI, take a few cities and kill most of the AI's units (within ~ 10-15 turns), once you give them a peace treaty, they will be afraid until they can replenish their troops. Those were the circumstances where it happened in a game I played recently.

It's not just that. I had a game where Monty was afraid of me right after I met him in the ancient era. I had no clue why it happened (the game was less than 5 turns in). I really don't know what makes leaders afraid of you (or stop being afraid of you) though I'd like to! :)

I've found (on Emperor/Immortal) that the AI will most often be afraid of me after an early warrior rush or similar - it doesn't seem to happen late game, when they've already got good reason to hate you, but early on, if you rush an enemy AI and kill them quickly, other AI might become afraid.

I had Darius be afraid of me in one game, briefly, though he quickly turned hostile instead, and that was after I' rushed the Iroquois. Similar situation with Suleiman after I killed Montezuma in another game with Chinese warrior rush. I imagine that, before they get the opportunity to become super powerful, such a display of force is supposed to be frightening (and technically should later on, but won't because they'll have built up too much to consider you a threat)

Don't know what it does though. They certainly weren't afraid enough to give me freebies, and weren't too afraid to enter war with me a little later, so who knows? Hopefully the patch will let us in on it

It really doesn't make sense. I had Augustus be "afraid" of me after he rolled his own continent, taking all of the precious maritime city states except the one he was allied with (I had none on my continent). It came down to a 1v1, and I had severe issues with growth with half my continent unsettled (this was before I overcame my fear of settling new cities and increasing the social policy costs). His empire was flooded with troops and he had twice my GDP. I by rights should have been more afraid of him than him of me. I still won anyway with some coastal capital domination cheese.

Conversely, I've stomped many other AIs and left them with nothing but a single size 4 city (to avoid the civ-slayer diplomacy debuff), and they weren't afraid at all.

Mine happened on Immortal as well with Montezuma, I reloaded and did a few things differently in the Ancient Era/Starting Turns (nothing militarily mind you, I don't think I was building many units at the time, still rolling with like a scout and a warrior)

Not long after meeting me (America) he was afraid. It's happened a few times, usually with him, and I know his chance to be Afraid is higher than the other leaders by default... and I know it doesn't make any sense for it to happen... but I was hoping it means something lol :)

If I were Montezuma I might $hit my pants upon meeting the Spanish. But the Americans didn't wipe out Aztecs if I remember correctly :)

Maybe Monty is just a coward. I've gotten him to be afraid twice on Deity. In one case, I had killed one warrior and stolen three workers. In the other I think I'd just stolen one worker. I eventually wiped him out both times so it was justified, but it seemed really premature to be afraid. Maybe he's psychic?
