Fortresses? Did someone say fortresses?

Can anyone explain to me why the AI never builds fortresses?! In civ2 fortresses were a big favourite of the AI, but in civ3 this seems to be totally reversed... :( Why?

I have found them to be very useful when defending my territory from pesky invading civs.... so why o why do civs not use them for their own purposes?1?!

:(

Actually I noticed them building fortresses on important positions such as choke-point and colonies.

i think workers are better used to boost productivity and transfer that production to a stronger military. the maginot line probably works against the ai but humans will use ships to circumvent it.

besides, bombardment destroys fortresses :cringe: :rocket2:

Right! Of course, they must now mount a sea invasion. If you have control of the seas, you are impregnable. If not, it is still easier to defend against a sea invasion. Bombardment destroys fortresses, so which is cheaper? Fortresses, Transports, Battleships, Artillery? And who can get it there first.

Of course, I don't use fortresses in most games. They need a little more bombard to make them useful. Then you could make killing zones.

artillery :) it comes with infantry, the backbone of a fortress line. and you can't capture my artillery unless you attack, which defeats the purpose of the fortresses :)

I've seen the AI sprinkle fortresses on luxuries and strategic resources, although they are rarely manned. The AI has never used a fortress successfuly to defend against one of my assaults.

My fortress strategy is mainly to build "firebases," a couple defenders stacked with as many bombard units as possible. The AI will forego attacking the fortresses even while the artillery contained therein pounds whatever they send my way into dust. You don't need a chokepoint for this fortress strategy; they do well in open land.

I'm not sure what you meant. The way I understand it, that logic would apply to real life as well, so that is why . . . why they have never built fortresses historically?

The fortress provides a haven for artillery.
