Here's my situation.

I'm scratching my head just a tad here and feeling a little flat (I love this games complexities)...

So, I'm playing on Sovereign difficulty as the very unique Confucius/Maya (working up to Deity), Pachacuti is cruising along with 9/5 towns towards the end of Antiquity age (antage)... how his civ was still happy is BEYOND me.
Xerxes hates me, hostile towards everyone for the entire age, and Revolutionary Nepoleon (Revnep) was my ally for about 70% of the age, just doing a bit of chillin'n'tradin' together and enjoying a few beers/baijius/reds on weekends.
By the end of Antage, I was leading (adjacency bonuses to the moon), Pach and I were friendly trading, enjoying eachothers company and bonding over our hatred for Xerxes (I never went to war with him but Pach did, and Revnep did once outside of our alliance in the early days).
Antage ends, and the relationships stand as such: Xerxes hostile (still), Pach helpful, Revnep ally - Pach and Xerxes were at war and Xerxes still hated EVERYONE - such a likeable lad...

At the start of Exage, Xerxes holds on to his bitter temperament and remains hostile, Pach is neutral, and Nep is helpful.
By turn 20 or so, Pach denounces me.... ouch. Then on turn 25, he DECLARES WAR ON ME?! I nearly fell off my Secretlab. He must really hate the Ming.
So, to counter, turn 26 I ally with Revnep once again (he was already friendly as this required little effort to build back up). As Revnep was at war with Xerxes (again), I had to declare war on Xerxes myself for the first time (I'll jump on that wagon) as I needed help from Nep to assist with handling Pach and his huge penis, I mean army - which he does.
Then, the following turn, Nep has a bipolar moment and flips his lid, abruptly ends the alliance with me, does a complete 540 degree spin and DECLARES WAR ON ME?!

I went from zero enemies, to everyone on my island wanting me dead. In barely 1 turn!?

So, turn's out he was already allied with Pach prior to our alliance. He chose him over me with this 10/11 cities and other impressive qualities.
So why the deception? Surely he could have just declared war on me at the same time as Pach to save me getting my hopes up, thinking I had a true friend til the end.

I guess that Chinese red wine offended him.

Now it is time to die, I think.
Wish me luck.

I wonder how Ben Franklin felt in my game. I am Machiavelli. We were buddies from the start of antiquity. Then, he does the unforgivable: settles a location right as my settler was two turns away from that very spot. I quickly built up an army of hoplites while continuing to be his friend. I moved them into position and took advantage of Machiavelli's unique skill. It was a drawn out battle, but I eventually gained control.

I'm halfway through exploration age, and that city isn't even that great, to be honest.

Playing on Sovereign as well. It's quite a jump from viceroy.

I like that alliances actually sort of force you to pick a side when your ally goes to war. But yeah, I'm always a little worried about what would happen in the above, where you have like an uneven set of alliances.

That's definitely a downside of the new system - if you want to ensure at least a little bit of stability, you have to commit to one alliance partner and always be ready to go to war with him/her.
Anything else can get messy in a hurry (and will get more chaotic with more civs)

But it's much more fun than the friendliness stasis you could reach in Civ6.

At least when they declare war at you with such high relations you get a lot of influence, and a hefty amount of war support (making their unit kind of "cute").

And the more I see this kind of interaction, the more Harriet Tubman with her 5 free war support when attacked seems nice (even better if you get the gate of All Nations, for two more)...

If they were allies, Napoleon would declare war on previous turn. Seems like you both offered alliance at the same turn (which looks logical) and Napoleon accepted both and afterwards had to choose. I was in the same position, receiving two alliance offerings on the same turn from 2 AIs going to war at that turn.
