Has anyone else noticed that if you set your own Science rate very low, the AI seems to research even slower than they normally do?

It seems as if when you shut your research down, the AI slows its research down too, so it never catches up, but as soon as you start pumping up the beaker rate, they research more quickly (but still can't catch up ;) )

I've actually done this on purpose a couple times to slow them down when researching a Wonderkiller tech, and wondered if I'm just shooting myself in the foot. Does the AI adjust it's tax rates base on the human's rates or am I just imagining things???

I think you are right.

Cuz in my last game I headed toward Alpha Centauri with a spaceship.
I had all three spacecomponents sience's and I wanted a fast growth of my cities.

So, I put the sience bar at 0% and alot in luxuries. And all computer players couldn´t get the space module.

So, I think you are right, but Im not sure

No its true.
One "strategy"(more like just a different fun way to play) was to set science to 0 after Monarchy and rely on aggressive hut hunting until Invention. You'll need 1 scientist somewhere.

This can used to great advantage in many scenarios.

You guys are right!

In my last game though - and for the first time - the AI was ahead of me in the science race. So I switched science rate to O% and manged to steal from him every four turns (!) he got an advance. That way I raised lots of money and when he built Appollo I launched a SShip in no time!

yes, the AI is stupid. It tries to match your science rate and then somehow manages to fall severly behind.

I think this depends on what level you are playing at. On Chieftain, Warlord and Prince levels, you cant fall behind on science no matter what you do. But on King, Emperor or Deity it is quite possible to lose to the AI by falling behind on science.

I don't think I've ever fallen behind in science, I've fallen behind in number of units a couple of times under democracy though.

I've never fallen behind either. In upper level games the AI can run with you neck and neck if it has allies, but alone it is always at least twenty turns behind in science. On Cheiftain however, I don't even know why it bothers to research at all. I'm researching future techs and it just discovered gunpowder.
