just started a new game with 143 huge map medieval start emporer diff. The Romans started very close to me and all there units are starting with huge amounts of experience! new archers and catapults{cant remb roman name] start with range 3 shooting over obstacles. all there units seem to start with a dozen experiance upgrades I assume this is a bug. There ripping me apart.

Did you actually observe new units created with this much experience? The AI is actually a lot better about preserving units now so if Rome went to war with another AI it could have actually gotten them promoted up to that level. We're just used to AI units dropping like flies and never getting more than the 2-3 builtin promotions. There's something awesome about finally beating down those high powered AI units.

Yes the first roman unit I saw was a spearman it was within a few dozen turns of start of game and already had very large number of promotions... all the roman units have many many promotions

Although I've never played a medieval start, it would make sense that the units would start with a lot of experience, because they now do by that stage in an ancient-start game.

If this is supposed to be happening then should not my units also start out with the same experience? his archers are oneshotting everthing I have from range 3 over hills. please note I am talking archers not crossbows or longbows I have finished games with tech tree maxed out and never seen one unit with this much experience let alone whole armies.

It happens now as early as the medieval era with militaristic civs. This is meant to handicap you, given that the human has a tactical edge over the AI - so no, you wouldn't get the same promotions.

That said, keep in mind that I don't know if Thal designed the promotions to kick in automatically on medieval starts. Secondarily, I don't think these promotions are as rxtensive on lower levels.

Balancing advanced-start games is on my todo list. I focus on ancient-start games because that's what most people play, and I have limited time to work on this project. I'd recommend just dropping down a difficulty level.
