any one like to launch a massive air campaign in wars?
i myself is a air power fanatic... i bulids the largest air force every time so my fav unit is the stealth bomber (B-2) :crazyeye:

but i not too good at using the stealth bomber....
any one can offer tips on using them ?

For modern warfare, (and any other strategist can tell you this!), the air is the true battleground, and the best way to use it is with stealth bombers near jet fighters. Since S fighters cant do superiority, then you use jet fighters to defend the area's by air. I sewnd fleets with an aircraft carrier, then base then near the carrier not only as protection, but also to be protected by the fighters if bombers start to threaten your attack fleet. As far as specific targets for bombing... go for strategic resources, connecting roads, cities with harbors, Troop fortifications, and cities in that order first to last. As seen many times in other wars, if you can cut your opponents supply, it is only a matter of time before they run out and collapse.:D

I beeline for stealth, especially if the Americans are within striking distance. Their F-15's can chew up a normal bomber, and they like to make lots and lots of them. Never found much use for the stealth fighter, though. Even with precision bombing, it leaves much to be desired.

then how abt precision bombings ? the Americans in real life are damn good at it . but the actual chance of hitting the buildings are quite low in Civ3. :(

Air power is useless...
I is (argh) a fan of land and water combined attacks...

u say useless course u never realise how air power can influence and decide the victors of a war in Civ3 as well as in reality.

I play Marla Singer's world map and air and naval power is certainly very important. It takes 5 to 6 turns to cross the atlantic, and a fleet of battleships will allow you to travel up and down coasts - of Africa, China, North America, India - and bombard strategic targets. The huge land mass means that your ships will probably penetrate deep within enemy territory before your ground units.

Since air power is the most important aspect of modern warfare in real life, I actually think it has been played down a bit too much in civ3. The Stealth Bombers have a ridiculously small action radius, and I really long for the possibility of making air bases, since air superiority is only possible to sustain over cities. That sucks.

I play Monarch and above (Although I have a poor win rate at Diety).

I find that I am am able to absolutely devestate any enemy with Bombers or SBombers on carriers. I generally skip all Sea power after galleys until Destroyers and then Carrier/Battleships become available.
I will develop flight, stockpile Bombers while researching for Carriers and then everybody had better watch out.

Except for Diety level (where I still can't ramp up my production to match the AI), I normally produce 3 to 8 Carriers loaded with ALL bombers and also 2 Battleship/2 Destroyer/1 Sub protection. A fleet of this size is only vulnerable to Nukes which come much later. Cruise missels and Artillery are avoided by moving my Carriers in to the shoreline, bombing, and then moving back out of range.

Normally, I do not use fighters for protection, I just keep building bombers and replace on the Carriers as necessary.

I concentrate on - IN ORDER - 1) Military Impact Resources - Oil, Coal, Aluminum, Uranium, etc. 2) Luxury resources. 3) Road systems to cut off individual cities. 3) High cost or multiple move replacement - Anything on a mountain, then Jungle or hills. 4) Cities - Destroy the Harbor!, Destroy the Airfield!, LOWER the Population to prepare to TAKE the city.

I also find it very helpfull to bomb 3 squares wide completely around a city until every improvement is gone. This prevents any ground forces from reaching the city if I have just taken it and it makes the city almost useless to the AI while we are still at war.

Lastly, the 3 square swath of totally bombed out squares is also great for isolating entire sections of enemy land, It will require any ground forces to move a second time to cross the swath and slow him down. I ALWAYS try to do this before I land troops (and 1 Settler).

Air power is totally sweet if you station carriers in a chain across an ocean. The planes can fly from one to the next much faster than the carriers can move them across.

Its also awesome as a means of punishing someone. Very low casualty, can usually stop the war before they get troops over to you.

Replying to DaveMcW -

I agree that ground troops can overrun all. However I generally just Nuke and sometimes re-nuke any stacks the computer sends at me. I have NEVER had the AI nuke my troops but I expect any (EVERY?) human player to nuke concentrations of troops if the alternative is there.
I have been attacked by 100-200 AI troops in stacks. 1-2 nukes = 300 enemy gone. The few 1 HP troops that are left simply allow me to create elite units. Nukes are an EXTREMELY cost effective and militarily effective DEFENSIVE strategy. Build those Tactical Nukes and keep a couple ON LAND!!
