Hey - I've been reading the threads for those succession games some of y'all have been having at deity+ level (which I have only just been inspired to begin playing having learned heaps of tricks from this forum) and was wondering:

How do you keep getting gifts from alliances?

I find that even when Worshipful, my allies accuse me of being a greedy sniveller and then break the alliance.
I'm guessing it has something to do with my power level?

Also, how do I get one of those neat pictures under my name (I can't seem to find the button or something)?

Maintaining Alliances does matter on your power rating as well as the version of the game you are playing. 2.42 is easier to maintain than MPG.

As for the picture under your username (called an avatar), look here.

In you User CP you can change many aspects of your profile, including checking for any Private Messages you may have.

Right. Well I'm playing MPG. I've read a few of the ins and outs of understanding my power level and it seems that to get anything out of the AI one must be significantly less powerful then them.
I just notice that you guys always seem to rake in the goodies.
Any tips besides maintaining an aura of weakness?

MPG is much more difficult to maintain any sort of friendly stance with the AI. In MPG their feelings towards you can (and usually does) drop down to unfriendly/hostile each turn. In 2.42 it will at least maintain itself at a reasonable level.

In either version, you will usually need to give them some gifts (usually techs) to keep them happy.

In MPG, I'll usually make them happy once early on, trade maps with them, then let them sit. In 2.42 you can try to get an alliance with them, then request gifts from them every so often.

Pay attention to their attitude (F3), gift techs to make them happier, and NEVER backstab anyone if you want to beg for gifts.

When samson played (and won) his one city size one challenge, he managed to receive lots of gifts every turn, but this is not the easy way

Using 2.4.2 classic helps more than anything. That, combined with being small, and having a SPOTLESS reputation, and they will often hand you their techs and treasury for several millenia. As Lafayette says, this is how you can win with a single size 1 city. The AI's see you with one little citizen and take pity on you. Meanwhile, they gift you all their gold, and your one little citizen eventually produces about 500 beakers per turn.

Smash contends you can get just as much from the AIs using MPG by saving up gifts and gifting a whole lot of stuff in bursts to get their attitude up, but it's a lot more difficult and I've never been able to do it successfully for any length of time. Then again, I'm not half the player he is.

YEah. The times when I was amything less than mighty have long passed, so I often find that AI attitude is permanently negative. I have to visit and gift each Civ constantly to make sure they're level with me in the techs and I have to spend my way to oblivion to make them feel a bit more secure.
Thanks to you guys, tho, now I know to play on deity+1 or 2 with mega barbs, so finally me and the other civs are all in the same dangerous boat, making alliance a more likely possibility. Yet they still won't HELP me.

Oh well. More time and a feel will help, I guess. Any hints as to how often you can visiti to ask for gifts etc , given your relative power?
