I just noticed an AI cheat I've not come across before. I checked the intelligance screen for the Sioux before I attacked, and the had no alliances, When I attack they activate an alliance with the vikings who activate an alliance with the Aztecs etc and I am at war with 5 civs.

Might be a late game thing. I've noticed a similar effect -- send a spy to check out a city, and for the rest of the turn, you can go back and refresh yor memory. I've noticed sometimes that the production has changed during my turn -- in fact is sometimes has changed more than once.

So I see no reason why the ai couldn't conduct a little diplomacy while I'm checking out their production variances...

I get your point, but I didn't go off and move other units in between, it was straight forward check then attack.

Is it possible they had an Alliance with the Sioux, but "no contact" with them? It's possible using Cheat Mode or in Scenarios, but I'd imagine it was impossible in a standard game...

the AI has many little bullsh*t manuevers it uses to fight back. It's either pathetic or fun to crush.

I have had this happen to me occasionally on Diety in MGE. In one instance, I checked a civ via embassy established by dip, and it had no contact with anyone, yet when I attacked it the same turn, it had an ally who declared war on me. I have also seen production change in an A.I. city during my turn. No idea why it happens. Maybe the A.I. gets nervous when one brings up troops to its city?

In a similar vein, has anyone else noticed that early in the games, an A.I. trireme will appear and occasionally attack one of your cities, yet, after the attack you will still not have any contact with that civ and will NOT be at war with it. When your attacked, your "dips" should be "aware" of your enemy.

Later in the game I notice "no contact" messages from civs I previously had contact with (usually through Marco Polo, but several times ones I established embassies with Dips too), particularly if I am Supreme and a serious gap is widening between my civ and the next most powerful.

Regarding triremes, nothing done at sea seems to have an impact on the initial civ contacts. Only a ground unit seems to initiate real contact with other civs.
