Perhaps I'm blind and cannot even read the Civilopedia. If that's the case please don't be too harsh, but: How the heck do I build any kind of angel? They all seem to be dependent of the "Angel" ... but this unit doesn't have any requiirement. So, what do I have to do?

The Mercurians get an Angel unit (mace man equivalent) for free whenever a good religion's/civ's unit dies. They also start out with several of these when they are summoned into the game by the Mercurian Gate. No one, not even the Mercurians, can ever build these units. Other angels are upgrades of Angels, with level requirements.

Edit: I think its actually only a percentage chance when for when each one dies.

Play the Mercurian civilization, wich you can summom into the game by building the Mercurian Gate wonder (and giving the city it is built to the Mercurians), that is only avaiable if Hyborem and the Infernals are already in the game.

Are you sure about that MC.

I am playing as Basium and in my current game I am at war with everyone except for one civ (Khazad) - one of the joys of playing as the Mercurians in a world filled with Evil civs.

I can understand not getting Angels when I kill units from the Evil civs, but in a strange game, the Svartalfar are a Good Civ, having adopted the Order as their religion.

I am killing many, many of their units and definitely not getting an Angel with each kill.

In fact, I noticed with .25l the amount of Angels I get is a lot lower than in previous versions. Before, I had to immediately delete any Angels with no XP because I was getting so many and my maintenance costs were soaring.

It seems like now you get as Angels some sort of percentage of Good units killed, rather than one for one.

Sarisin, the alignement of a unit doesn't depend from that of its Civ AFAIK. It depends on the religion associated with the unit, and not all units have any religion associated to them. The religion depends on the number of religions present in the city where the unit is built, so it is possible to have an evil unit with a good civ. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thats what I always though, but I also noticed that units without any religion sometimes go on to serve the Mercurans/Infernals too. (At least I know that living Mercurian units return as angels even if they didn't have a religion)

I would have guessed that is because most disciples are disciples of a specific religion. Of course, Paladins do seems to spawn angels. I also noticed that if, as Basium, you use a unit with commando to capture ritualist, then when they dies they give both an angel to you and manes to Hyborem.

I see.

But, wouldn't that work the other way too? For example, normal good civs like the Kuriotates, Elohim and Malakhim are all evil as well because they adopted AV in my game. Couldn't they have good units? And, when I kill one of them, should I get an Angel?

My point is that I am killing plenty of units with everyone at war with me (my ally, Tasunke, is killing his share too) and I am not getting nearly as many Angels as I would have received in prior versions of FFH2.

I have to say even when the counter hit 100, I didn't get the huge windfall of Angels I was expecting - only 5 or 6. This also was VERY different from games I played as Basium in .23.

BTW, I am fairly certain I have received Angels when I have killed Barbarian units. They have no religion, or affinity. How does that work?

i thought neutral units give angels/manes every 1/4 times? or something like that. how are the religions in your game?

Razed cities give that amount of angels/manes

Units can have a religion promotion: Order, RoK (and Empyrean?) will become angels and AV, OO (and CoE?) will become manes

Tasunke (my ally) has FOL and is Neutral. I (Basium) and Svartalfar have the Order and are Good. Khazad has ROK and is Neutral.

Seven civs (Hyborem, Varn Gosem, Cardith Lorda, Ethne the White, Auric Ulvin, Flauros, and Perpentach) all have AV and are Evil.

I have not been at war with Khazad, but some of my ally's units have been killed.

Do you mean Fellowship of Leaves units?

I'm still confused about why, then, I would get an Angel when I kill a barbarian unit.

I just played a few more turns as Basium and definitely got an Angel immediately when I killed a barb Goblin Chariot.

Are barb unit kills somehow split up between manes and Angels?

I don't know what FoL gives, propably nothing.

The barb thing seems weird, I've always thought they are followers of Camulos

they are neutral, like FoL units, so I assume the answer is yes (the question being if they are split up randomly or even with a round robin algorithm).
