Annoying system freezes

This started a few months ago, so may be related to an OS update but I can't prove it either way.

Civ IV will every now and then completely freeze the system (no other app has ever done this since I moved to an Intel iMac). It doesn't happen every time, nor with the same other apps running. However, it looks like I can narrow it down to one ofthe following:

- iTunes
- Quicktime Player
- possibly internal overheating (the temp quickly rises to 55C after launch)

Other suspects are possible, though.

Anyone had similar issues with Civ IV?

Which OSX are you running? I have no problems on an Intel Duo with OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). I looked at Lion and consider a downgrade, so I don't use it.

That is the same as mine, except that my Core Duo is only 2.4 GHz. I have all the current updates except iTunes, since I don't use the iTunes store and all the updates lately seem to be for that. It may be the overheating that you mentioned, which would suggest a component is failing. The other thing that comes to mind is that something in either the CIV program, or more likely your OS installation has become corrupted. Do you get the freeze with other programs or only CIV? If only CIV, I would suggest reinstalling it, since it may have gotten corrupted. If you do that be sure to save your CIV sub folder from your Documents folder under another name as a backup, so you don't loose whatever you have in there (past games, custom mods, etc). You can then delete the one that the reinstall creates and rename your backup to the original name.
