Anyone ever won a game by hoarding 39 great artists and then popping 'em all at once?

I'm gonna try this...

I need to, like, beeline biology by spamming cottages, and then build superfarms everywhere plus a national park... and then 10 artists specialists per city... i'll need a lot of cities... it might work...

Maybe...running all those artists, you probably wouldn't need more than 38 great artists to reach legendary status in three cities...

39 Great Artists seems like a lot to get. The last one will need 3900 Great People Points, running 10 Artists + a couple of wonders under Pacifism only get you about 70 points a turn. So you would already need 50-55 turns for each of the last artists. Of course, National Park + National Epic will speed this up quite a bit but you would need your other cities to contribute as well.

Instead of Biology, Medicine for Sushi is a no-brainer. See how much artists you can run with that on a Huge Island map!

Since the AI doesn't care one bit whether you are approaching a victory condition or not, going for culture all at once instead of continously has of course no strategic value.

More like 9600 GPP. The increment increases to 200 after 10 Great people, then 300 and 400. It is possible, but you probably want either Sushi or Cereal and a map type with lots of resources for the corp of your choice.

Ouch - 9600 points?

I rarely get more than 10 Great People in a game so I didn't know that.

I think the record is 132 Great People born by Kaitzilla. He mentions the 133rd great person would cost 285600 GPP, so the cost doesn't seem to increase always after 10 great people. Not sure how it behaves when you get above 20.

yeah but it would be more fun to pop them all at once in random stupid cities

My culture games usually had me popping about 15 on the last turn to win.

I once popped 14 GP at once* to get a quadruple golden age. I can never get enough of the same GP to hoard more than 5 or 6 of the same one.

* Well, not exactly at once – I popped them in a particular order so I’d be sure to have 5 different GPs for the 4th GA. I could never get that damn Priest for another one.

Haven't ever done it, CtE and just basic :commerce: --> culture slider in the legendary cities will be faster as the cost scales. Of course bombing city #3 (and maybe some in #2) is routine.

I've managed to bomb city 3 to legendary on deity, with 3 cities in the empire total :p.

Not the normal 6/9, impressive. (it must take you longer ;) )

No question, you can lose if the AI goes unusually fast (or declares on you obviously). IIRC it was early-mid 1800's type finish.

Slap a few cathedrals down (probably just 2 religions spread so 1 per religion, but if lucky you'll get more), hermitage, free speech etc. Sistine helps for sure but not necessary. Having good commerce cities set up early and a food center is pretty important though. Oxford and non-culture wonders are trash, lib --> nationalism is pretty useful if you can still get there fast enough, trade into printing press if at all possible.

Edit:

I actually did this in a deity graduate school series game (1806 finish), though the image of the win is lost to the void of imageshack:

Yeah, that's where a few extra helper cities are beneficial. Producing wealth to keep the slider up or being whipped down for troops for that unplanned dow. Since I do usually go to nationalism, I'll do MT before I shut it down so at least I have something to defend myself with.

But 3 cities is less than I've ever done.

With 3 vs 6 cities if you get hit during final stretch you're going to die regardless most likely. You're shutting off tech and once the enemies have rifles cuirassers etc aren't going to cut it, and teching rifles takes too long.

6 can help keep you alive in the early goings with units, but then 3 is easier to manage diplomatically so which one is easier to survive is situational.

I've survived a couple of times because of 6 but yeah, generally you're right.
I'll trickle research to rifles but it does take too long.
