Anyone got isolated yet? CS not included.

I squandered my one true isolated start with a low difficulty, as backwards as that is - like I could have changed the difficulty, but anyway... I started a game last night on immortal that I really thought was going to be isolated, and I was so excited...then Washington showed up from this extraordinarily long 1 hex wide land bridge that I assumed was just a peninsula.

At this point I'm not sure what I'd do in isolation - I reckon pretend that I just dominated my continent with horses, settle it out, and tech up to frigates and see if they could dent the coastline of the other continent(s).

I rolled one that I probably should have kept for later testing. Emp, massive amounts of rivered grassland hills, gems, and silver. Basically every city (would've fit 4-5) would've had 3-4 mined resources. Even had 1 maritime and 1 culture city state all to myself. But I rerolled cause it likely would've been a stupidly easy and pacifist diplo/culture win.

The thing that made isolated starts tough in Civ IV was that you missed out on tech trading, which was an enormous boost, while everyone else (probably) got silly advanced by peddling techs around. Now, you miss out on research agreements, which are good but nowhere near as powerful as the old tech trade system, and resource trades, which are good, but not gamebreaking if you miss out on them. Plus it's pretty easy to get caravels in this game, and I've yet to see a game where I couldn't meet almost all the other civs and city-states just with Triremes.

And for that price, you get never needing to worry about someone getting angry about your cities being too close to theirs and hating you forever for it. Or more likely, them settling next to your capital and then DoWing for settling too close to their lands. Although I guess for those who haven't sworn off early rushes forever as a tactic that utterly trivializes the game, not having anyone nearby to conquer can be a hindrance.

It's not that easy to get Caravels. I've had two starts without massive rivers, without much luxuries, without maritimes, and without any way to meet anyone not Militaristic without using Caravels.

It seemed to take forever to tech Caravels then.
