The title says it all. Has anyone tried the new Apple 20" display? Will it run? What resolution would you select? How does it look?

I don't think anyone is follish enough to buy such crap... it's cost is far to high comparing with competition and any lcd display makes very poor gamers (horible refreshing rate...)

Well, they're selling, so somebody is buying them. Heck, if I had the cash, I'd buy one. As for refresh rates, there are two routes to combat that problem: first, even on a big a monitor, you can display on a lower resolution (and stuff just looks Huge). The other factor is enough vram on the graphics card. Have enough -- and a chip that's fast enough -- and you'll be fine. And chances are, most folk that can afford a 20" monitor can afford a system with a respectable gfx card.

I don't think that anyone who is buying a 20" lcd is buying it soley to play games on it - unless they have wayyyy too much time on their hands.

'scuse me. I don't know of any 20" or larger LCD display at a lower price and there is nothing in CivIII that would push it at all. Maybe LCDs arent the best for quick-twitch shooters yet, but they should work just fine for turn-based strategy games. Of course, if you mean CRTs when you say competition, sure they're cheaper, but they don't come in the wide-screen format so they suck for playing DVDs.

Wow, who thought anyone would care why I'm interested in the monitor. I'd like an LCD for the space and energy saving. I'm also looking forward to the wide screen. The new Apple 20" has received universal praise. I have no doubt it is a great monitor and well worth the price. However if it makes playing Civ3 impossible, or even less enjoyable, it's a no go for me. I have played Civ3 with an LCD monitor without problem.

However the 20" is new and has very unique dimensions. Will Civ3 refuse to run, will it be horribly distorted, will it run fine but not fill the entire screen?

Heading to Fry's (and maybe the Apple store) on Thursday to have a look.

I believe that in recent patches, they included resolutions that are compatible with the resolutions of wide screens. It should run perfectly fine.

I didn' w ant to pay Apple prices and bought a DELL FP2000 20" LCD. It doesn't llok great, abut I'm very pleased with it. You can play hours and hours of Civ III without eyestrain. It's great for editing large documents, spreadsheats, etc.. And at least for Civ III, speed isn' an issue. ;)

I picked up one of the 20" displays last week. The picture quality is unbelievable and well worth the ticket price. In any case, I've only been able to run Civ 3 (1.21g) at the lowest res available (1024x768). Any other res leaves the screen black. While I understand that the game can't run at a res higher than the max for the display, I also can't run the next highest resolution, which is well within the Cinema display's range. Good thing my secondary monitor is still a tube. ;)

I'm running my Dell at 1600x1200 on the DVI port of my MDD G4 (OS X 10.2.4).

It seems to be not a Civ III problem .....
