Dawn breaks over a vast expanse of grassland; in the distance a herd of cattle is grazing peacefully and to the west there stands a tall mountain that will one day be known as beacon mount. Across the grass a small group of humans can be seen trudging slowly towards the river kicking up clouds of dust behind them. They are known as the Arabians. These humans have journeyed for generations of years to reach their destination and though they do not know it they are about to change history. At their head strides a tall man with dark brown skin, flashing green eyes and long black hair. He has new and radical ideas about how the tribe should live and has risen to leader ship through his wit and cleverness rather than brute force. As the group nears the bank of the river the man, known as Abu Bakar to his fellows orders a halt. He turns to his tribe and says, “ For time immemorial we have lived as Nomads wandering the world, always on the move never in one place for more than a week and yet not one of us has ever paused to ask why. Well I do so now and I say we end this pointless wandering. We shall found a city on the banks of this river. The cattle to the east will provide us with food, our houses shall give us security and the river shall give us water. We will prosper here and life will be easy. There will be no more sleepless nights hiding from wild animals or searching for food and water. Life will be long and peaceful and our children shall live in peace and without knowing the meaning of want.”

Several weeks later there stood on the side of the river a cluster of small thatched houses grouped around the palace of Abu Bakar. His was the grandest residence with its magnificent pillars and imposing doorway. From it looked out upon Mecca, as the city had been called, and was pleased by what he saw. From among his tribe Abu Bakar had picked the most intelligent and appointed them to help him organise the city. They were split into six categories. One in charge of cities and funding, one in charge of trade, one in charge of dealing with foreigners, one in charge of defending the city, one in charge of protecting the heritage and culture of Mecca and one in charge of scientific funding.

A group of ten of the quickest men in the tribe were put together and ordered to explore the village that had be seen to the north west. They approached the village cautiously taking care not to alarm the inhabitants. As they crept closer a shout went up from a corner of the village and soon the scouts were surrounded by a group of men equipped with bows and arrows. The leader of the scouts said clearly, “We come in peace we seek friendship with your people for we live beyond yonder mountain and have founded a city there.”
He then repeated to them much of what Abu Bakar had said and they too were amazed by the life he had portrayed in his speech. They agreed to move to the city of Mecca and to teach the Arabians the art of creating bows and arrows. Thus for a time the Arabians prospered.

Well that’s the first instalment, what do you think? Comments are welcome.

Mecca had grown over the past three hundred years. Its population had roughly doubled in size and another group of scouts had been assembled. These scouts had travelled south for many days until they came to the edge of a grim and foreboding forest where they had halted for a while.

Meanwhile the other group of scouts had travelled north over a sun scorched desert where water was short and they went for days without drink, there throats were parched by thirst, then just as all seemed lost, they came across an island of greenery in the midst of that bleak expanse. Here water was plentiful and game abounded. They named this place the lonesome spring. After refilling their water skins and stocking up on fresh food they trekked onwards. At last they reached the coast where the sun made the water sparkle and glisten. Here was a small village such as none they had seen before and there lived people inside great houses made of brick and mortar. These friendly people were amazed that the scouts had never seen houses like these before and taught them the art of masonry.

To the east of Mecca where cattle were plentiful a team of workers had just finished creating a network of canals that would bring water from the river to this area. This effectively doubled the amount of food being produced by the area. The team of workers was then ordered to build a network of roads among the cattle to allow the citizens of Mecca to reach the area more easily. Life in Mecca continued much as before but soon that was about to change.
