Archeologist

Once you reach archeology, you will be able to see the sites... which were created by in-game events like battles won against the barbarians, or destroyed barbarian settlements... very fun addition. Once you create an archeologist unit, you send it to one of the sites, and order it to dig (~ 5 turns), and when it's done, you have the choice of creating a landmark for culture, or taking the artifact to one of your free artifact slots (museums, etc).

Barbarians aren't the only thing that makes them. They can also be where ancient ruins were located and where battles have been fought between civs and city-states, and where cities have been razed.

I wish there were an easier way to locate them - instead of just eyeballing the entire map. The map overlay for resources helps, but there really should be some way to just loop through them or something.

THIS! It was fun the first time scouring the map but after a while it becomes a real pain to have to scan all the various kinds of terrain textures in order to spot them. Sometimes they blend in quite well. My thought was that they could provide a button that when activated (like the hex grid button) made the tiles with a dig site highlighted in bright red or something. This would allow those who like the hunt to continue their searches and give those that would rather not the option to avoid some lengthy tedium.

Sometimes, I find a site where I distinctly recall fighting Barbs in the Ancient era (I have a pretty good memory) but when I excavate it says it was a site of a city razing....anyone else get this bug?

An auto feature for the Archaeologist would also be nice...like an automated worker or a unit set to automatically explore. An automated Archaeologist would look for the closest site and dig. Like workers, you automate at your own (potential diplomatic repercussions) risk.

How do you make an Archaeologist? My coop partner says that you make a University, then place a specialist in it?

Thanks,

Marc

Try to turn on resource icons at the bottom right. They don't blend in and are much easier to find.

. No comment.

I think all they would have to do is replacing the default icon with something more distinctive. The hidden antiquary sites can actually be spotted quite easily thanks to their unique blue/red color combination.

?
If you know the answer, state it...

Research Archeology and build an archeologist ?!?! The city must have a university.

Asking questions is fine and it's often fun to help people but ... come on, man. Just click on the civilopedia in-game or scan the tech tree for the icon. Can be done in 10 seconds. xD

I think you missed my question. I have a University in Venice, but didn't see the choice for an Archaeologist show up in my unit list. We are deducing that you need to place a Specialist in the University in order to make one. The in-game Help does not state this step.

I love your arrogant quip, though...not.

No specialist is required.

requirements:
*completely research Archaeology technology
*city to build must have University
*cannot purchase, only build

Hello Eagle.

How does one "completely research Archaeology technology"? My coop partner has Archaeologists, yet I don't. We both have the University, of course. He doesn't know how he received them.

Thanks,

Marc

Build university in city, research archaeology, build archaeologist like any unit (with hammers only, no purchasing them with gold). What's so difficult about this?

There is a technology on the top side of the early Industrial Era tech tree called Archaeology. It has Archaeologists, the Louvre, Archaeology Digs and reveal Antiquity Sites. If you and your partner are on a team and sharing your science, and he has them, then you should be able to build them as well.

I noticed that you mentioned you are playing as Venice. Venice does a lot of buying rather than building. I suspect you could get in the habit of going straight to the "Buy Building/Unit" menu. You won't find Archaeologists there. As Archaeologists can't be purchased, you can't make them in Venice's puppets. Only Venice can build them, and they have to do it the old fashioned way.
