Soldiers of the Dongola and Gordon Relief expeditions who set off up the Nile to reconquer Mahdist Sudan for the British Empire.

They were using Lancers??? I mean actually charging in this colonial outfit?

Yep, the 21st Lancers led a famous charge during the battle of Omdurman in 1898. Remember that the lancers were armed with a carbine as well, and most of the Mahdists were armed with swords and spears, so it seems like an ok match. Interesting sidenote, a young officer by the name of Winston Churchill was with the 21st lancers during the battle, although officially he was part of a different unit.
