It has to be for fun! Because we are not getting paid to play, the only way that I could see people not play for fun is if they are masochists and enjoy pain! They are playing for pain! To me rankings are fun. But I am biased because I am the #1 ranked teamer player. It was fun telling everybody about that. I don't care if people criticize the ranking concept. Because I have been the #1 ranked teamer for weeks I can laugh at it along with everybody else.

I am going to steer this thread a bit - I love fractal maps when the players get "fair" starts - if there is a way for people to custom create fractal maps with starts that are reasonable for everybody, I would push to get these in ranked games. To me "fair" starts mean that no player starts off with unfair advantages/disadvantages (no El Dorado, no starting off being surrounded by 3 players) but the players start with different "advantages" just like each Civ has a different advantage. For example, one person might not have iron, but they have a start they can defend until they tech pikes or something like that. Having a start without iron and being 8 tiles from Iriquois for example, is an unfair start.
