Hi people, i'm new here. Anyway, I just received a copy of Civ 4 and I installed it. However, I got the initializing issue with ATI. I looked at the main website and painstakingly followed their instructions up until 22, where it says, "INF error Video driver not found" and then "Setup was unable to complete the installation. Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup." However, I do not know how to do this. As in I don't know what a standard VGA driver is...i'mnot quite tech savy. I was wondering if you guys could guide me through this? I really would like to play this game.

Are you saying that the graphics card drivers you downloaded won't install?
Edit: If that is the problem then I installed a slightly older version for my ATI from here http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=5984 and it installed fine for me and the game runs well too.

Anywho, the civiv.com support site suggests the latest drivers. Try the slightly older ones in my link. It worked fine for me.

Now, what is the required hardware/software?

Well, assuming you do have an ATI card that should be all the hardware that you need. As for the software, I can't really think of anything that those drivers might need. Maybe the .net framework (but I doubt it). If you want to try that you can download it from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e3-f589-4842-8157-034d1e7cf3a3&displaylang=en (23MB).
Would you be able to post your DXDiag log? (Start Menu - Run - "dxdiag" (without the ""s) and when it's fully loaded hit the save all info button and attach the .txt file to a post here? That might tell us something?

If you hit "Go Advanced" you can attach the txt file to your reply rather than copy the text into it.
Well, I'd look at what make/model graphics card it found and its driver version, the operating system version you're running, RAM and Page File info, and DirectX Version I guess. Also, dxdiag should be able to find any errors that might be related to your problem.

There's a user forum for the Catalyst software/drivers which includes a thread ATI Driver FAQ & Troubleshooter at www.Rage3D.com. I believe that VGA issue is addressed there.
