In this colonization. you can attack a colony or indian settlement directly from you boats, (caravel, merchant, galleon) but it says you suffer a penalty*. I have read the civlopedia and it does not say the % of this amphibious attack penalty. Does anyone know what it is? you can get an amphibioius upgrade to ignore this but what is the penalty? -25%? 50% ? please let me know ---------DREWBLUE

You can confirm this number by going into Worldbuilder, dropping in a ship and a unit right next to an enemy city, and then checking the combat odds percentage that pop up whenever you propose an attack -- these odds give a breakdown of the bonuses and penalties associated with the attack.

Oh, and then exit from Worldbuilder and restart your game.

Before you make your amphibious attack right click on your unit and drag onto the enemy position. This will show you the combat odds and may indicate the amphibious penalty. If not, make the attack and check your combat log afterwards.

In AoD2, the amphibious penalty is 40%; can't load vanilla right now to check that out, but I think it's the same. With the amphibious promotion there is no penalty for amphibious attack and no penalty for crossing a river. This promotion requires Vet2 in vanilla and Vet4 in AoD2. This promotion is available to mounted, melee and gun units.

Just did some more checking. Penalty is -20%in vanilla and -40% in AoD2. This is set in GolbalDefines, AMPHIB_ATTACK_MODIFIER.

And you can always use the rightclick-hover to see the combat odds for any situation.

Why was the the penalty increased in AoD?

Since the pirate soldiers get attacked on land by the natives, why not replace the settlement attack bonus with the amphibous attack promotion.

I assume Dale has played the game a lot and made notes of things that are too easy and too hard and has adjusted many of the parameters to bring everything into better balance. Note that AoD2 is still under development. If you think it's not right just go into the xml file and change it. Actually, I go through the xml's and adjust certain things to my preference before I begin playing a new game.

Can't say that I really follow you on that second point. Once a soldier is on land there is no amphib assault.

Why was the the penalty increased in AoD?

Note that I'm not Dale, and this is just IMHO...

It's far too easy to launch amphibious assaults. And period naval vesselss were not at all adapted to this sort of situation. No landing craft or gangplanks onto the beach, eh?

In AoD2 the penalty for amphibious assaults is doubled, and the attack bonus for canons against settlements has been removed. Now canons are really only useful for reducing the defense bonus through several turns of bombardment.

Note however that there is a promotion available that negates the amphibious assault penalty - so a few units could become experts at it.

All this makes war, well, harder. Which is good, since the basic vanilla version of Civ4Col is such a cakewalk.

Why was the the penalty increased in AoD?
BTB & Wheldrake covered it, but another aspect was nerfing the exploit where you load up cannons/troops on a galleon and attack towns which cannot counterattack because you're at sea.

A merchantman full of cannons is easy to get early on, has (or at least used to-before 1.05) a great advantage to attacking settlements, and is near impossible to counter attack.

Doubling the penalty stops an easy exploit - its a change carried over from the last version of LooF, due to that complaint precisely
