Attacking with one unit moves the whole fortified stack

Hello,

I've always had one very frustrating problem when playing CIV4. I have a fortified stack of units guarding a city and enemy is next to my city. I try to attack enemy with one unit (select one unit only) and if i happen to destroy enemy the whole stack moves to that square leaving the city defenseless!

Does somebody know how to fix this?? I have had the same problem on two computers and on multiple versions of civilization 4...

um did you group all the units

No I only select one unit when i attack. If i kill the opponent the whole stack will move...
