I'm working on creating an Australian civ...

They overwrite the Iroquois.

Bonuses: Commercial and Scientific
Free techs: Masonry and Alphabet
Title: Prime Minister
Name: Edmund Barton
Gender: Male
Culture group: European
Favorite government: Democracy
Shunned government: Despotism
Aggression level: between left and centre
Build never: Nothing
Build often: Happiness, Growth, Workers

Great leaders:

Lalor (leader of 1854 uprising)
Deakin ("father of federation")
Monash (great WW1 general)
Menzies (longest-serving prime minister)
Dunlop (war hero)
Curtin (prime minister during WWII)
Hawke (one of the more successful PMs in recent years)

I've done the cities too, but I won't bother posting them yet.

...but the UU provides a problem.
I'm thinking an ANZAC unit (improved riflemen), or 3RAR (commando)...
and there's the other problem...I can't draw graphics for sh*t. Can anyone help here?

Well you could use Jasc's Animation Shop and the steps outlined by Moeniir in the Tutorial threads about using FLICster to change the colors on existing artwork. That's what I plan on doing...

Woo! You beat me to it :) I was gonna start making a civ for my wonderful country real soon. Oh well, I might switch to making an Aboriginal Civ now instead :)

As for the UU for the civ, I think you should go with the ANZAC unit. It holds a far greater historical signifigance. The only real problem with using them might be that they aren't just Australian, but New Zealand as well. Though they probably are more associated with Aussies, I guess...

Now all we need is someone to make a good map for Australia :)

Damn, I don't have Animation Shop.
I'll go with the ANZAC unit, but is there anyone who could just say, give the riflemen unit a recolor for this?

oops...forgot to add this..

yeah, I know the ANZAC troops aren't just Australian, but it's the best unique unit we've got :)

Well, it's not exactly an easy process... in fact, it's quite a pain in the arse. Right now (to get it looking good) you have to change the palette for EVERY FRAME of EVERY ANIMATION, which takes... maybe an hour... PER ANIMATION.

Maybe when Moeniir comes out with a better FLICster that handles palettes better it will be easier to change colors.

The UU surely must be the Colins class submarine...

Just like a normal sub, except it isn't invisible at all.

rotflmfao

Would it be possible to recolor in Photoshop or something like that? Or do I need to go find myself Animation thingie?

Once you have the palette loaded, recolouring isn't that differcult at all. Don't need animation shop to change colours, photoshop, paint shop pro, whatever will do.

How do I load the palette?

...then how do I recolor?
I probably already know how to do this, but I just want to make sure. :)

There's a bunch of info on this in the FLICster Thread But I'll give you the basics...

Every unit has several FLC files, which are animations. There are animations for running, attacking, dying, etc. Every animation is actually 8 animations put together because units can be moving in 8 different directions. For this reason, civ3's FLC files contain special info in their headers that tell civ3 how to properly play the FLIC's depending on which direction the unit is moving in.

Well, normal FLC editors won't read the headers and trying to create units solely with those programs will cause problems. SOOO Moeniir has developed FLICster, which separates existing animations into smaller animations (1 per direction per animation per unit) so now the attack FLC is 8 attack FLC's, one for each direction -- plus an .ini file that contains some crucial information. FLICster will also recombine the separated FLC's after you are done editing them.

OK, that being said, your editor program has to read FLC files. Photoshop does NOT read FLC's, only the first frame. Adobe Premier DOES read FLC's but I'm not really into Premier so I don't know how well it works for editing the palette. Jasc's AS doesn't give you the ability to edit the palette but since it's built into PSP, you can export each frame to PSP and change the palette that way.

!!ATTENTION!! Using the Replace Color feature is BAAAAD!!!! The way the palettes are set up for civ3's FLIC's makes it a real pain to work with the palettes! Some colors are reserved and if you change them your animation WILL NOT WORK!

My advice is to check out the FLICster post to figure out how to do this.

As for using Photoshop, it has the ability to load and save color tables, but again, you need to have SOME program that can read and save FLIC animations or else you are SOL.

Moeniir has just informed me that he's working on a new version of his FLICster program that will allow people to create units WITHOUT any sort of animation program... all that will be required are programs that recognize .pcx files. (Photoshop 6 does for sure).

Stay tuned... you should subscribe to this thread for updates.

Thanks again. :)
I've subscribed. It looks mighty complicated, but hey, I might actually learn something, right?

Don't worry... I and others will be posting step-by-step tutorials on how to create new units... just as soon as we do all the testing and make sure our creations work!

the australians must build a lot of entertainment, its all about fun in that country ;)
Why scientific tho?
My suggestion (only a suggestion) is that they should be militaristic and religious... j/k
maybe commercial and industrious?.. just a suggestion
keep up the work on the australian civ, ill surely play it :)
