I usually handle my workers manually until the industrial age or later. After that I order a few settlers to automatically build trade network, so they can lay railroads wherever they like to. But I still manually manage improvement orders.
I'm really lazy with the specialists. Sometimes I adjust them if a I have specific needs in a city, for example if I want to generate great people. I guess there would be some benifits from manually adjusting specialist in all cities. But I don't enjoy fiddling around with them too much, so I just leave them alone most of the time.

Manually use your workers is absolutely a MUST at the beginning of the game. This way you can make specialised cities, and only build as much farms as needed(the AI tends to overfarm) etc... Later, let's say from the middle ages I automate them, but I keep on eye on them, and quite often corrigate what they are doing, I build more cottages then the AI would do. When I am planning on going state roperty for example I start making workshops and watermills too.

I ususally only have them automated on the Trade Network. The rest of the improvements is up to ME!
I tried to fully automate some workers, but they didn't exactly do what I would have them doing on the tiles I wanted them to work on...so Network automation only for me

Does anyone know if there is any mods that automation workers have been changed to say automate just farms or chop forest or jungle things like that.
The game allows trade routes but not specifc cottages or improve city but not improve city with farms or chop all jungles.

I'd like to know how to auto bombard
you get a bunch of aircraft you should have to tell it to bomb a city each turn jsut tell them to auto bomb it or units
same with naval units thay should be able to auto bombard
you tell it to keep bombing until you decide otherwise
nice to beable to park a few naval units at the enemys citys and soften them up until they either get attacked or you finaly send land forces
