First of all it depends if you start with a civ, that has an unique unit/unique improvement in the early eras. If you have them, you are already better off, as they give easy era score. Other than that, here is a short guide on what to do:

I like to start the game with a scout. It lets me find other civs (+1 era score), tribal villages (+1 era score) and world wonders, which also give era score. Then I like to have a couple warriors dedicated to hunting down barbarian encampments, as they give a fairly big amount of era score (2 or 3 depending of if the camp has been activated or not). These are usually good enough to get you to a normal age.

Getting a golden age is a bit harder, at least on harder difficulties, as the eras change so fast. For that some useful things are as follows, settling on a world wonder gives you era score, having your first naval unit gives era score and finally becoming suzerain of city states gives you easy score. This can be easily done by sending the governor Amani to city states, as she gives +2 envoys to the city state she is in. If you have city states with 1 envoy, just send her there and you get easy erascore.

Finally, if you are doing early warmongering, you can get a lot of era score by capturing enemy capital and their last city. This can help you on a domination focused game.

... l It lets me find ... world wonders, which also give era score. ... settling on a world wonder gives you era score, ...

And with “world wonder” you mean “natural wonder”. ;)

Not that any experienced player would’t know exactly what you are talking about, but for new players, using an imprecise terminology might be a bit confusing.
Other than that: good advice! :)

The easiest ands most consistent way imho is to clear barbarian camps. Doing this will get you tonnes of era score ands a bonus if they're nearby you cities.

Other repeatable and easy ways include cockblocking levied military units from city states. If you usurp the suzerain status you get a bunch of era score, and this can be done multiple times even!

Getting tribal villagers in the first era gives you era score too, so scout about!

Dark age at the beginning is not bad. After that you can get heroic age.

The Ancient era is probably the hardest era to generate era score in.

Rather than just scraping through with a normal era, it can be immensely beneficial to enter a dark Classical era and then take advantage of three excellent Heroic Age dedications in the Medieval.

1-2 early scouts and excess warrior
Scouts generate era pointa roaming the world. Warriors head for barb camps and destroy them. The UU/UI, horseman/swordsman, +3 districts, and a galley if nessarry to get the last points for a golden age.

Dark Age starts are the strongest starts. If you can do a Dark Age start, always go for it. In my games I have the opposite problem, it seems I can never, ever get a Dark Age Start. It's usually Golden Age, sometimes I fail and get a normal. Dark Age starts are very powerful because you get a heroic age at the most important time in the game (when you are getting your cities online).

Taking a capital gives era score.
Eliminating a civilization gives era score; you don't have to take all the cities, but you do have to take the last.
Killing a unit the first time while a general is hanging around also gives era score.

Early points come mostly from world exploration: Discovering natural wonders, huts, city states, removing barbarians, funding new cities, doing improvements.... If you focus too much in war, is easy to miss the mark.
