Babylon

Babylon isn't agricultural so no cheap aqueducts. Also agricultural civs don't get cheap granarys.

While nobody has said how it sucks, nobody has given any recognition of their UU.

Since archer type units have been given a defensive bombadment rating, I started keeping some in all attacking forces in the early game. The Bab UU can be sent out for this reason, still add a bit of offence if need be, and defend as well as any other early (non UU) unit. If you do not start with Iron, they are a prime unit for "taking" it.

I just finished a early war with an AI Bab and I hated those UU. Most every time I made an attack, the defender got a free shot at me.

The Ottomans are IMO the best civ. Awesome traits Awesome UU what more do you want? I also like the Chinese, Germans, Russians and Austrians.

I too like playing as Babylon. Just to make the game more challenging for myself, I will disable cultural victory. I find it rather annoying when I'm going for a conquest victory but I get the cultural victory a hundred turns ahead of schedule. And no, I can't be bothered to do the micromanaging to keep from triggering a cultural victory too early.

Ottomans are very good. I won a domination game with them. Made a beeline for military tactics and triggered a GA and went forth and plundered. Don't think I ever researched another tech and my core cities largly stopped producing buildings. Wish I could have mobilised.

My first cultural win was with the Babs. It was almost too easy.

Their trait combo, with a good UU, would be unbalancing, I think. The weaker UU goes nicely with their strong traits.

Ironically, my second cultural win was with the Incas. Agri/exp. Not very 'cultural', you'd think. But I got the 100k win with them.

I certainly don't like playing against the babs. . .while some may call them 'weak', I've found they can expand to quickly and grab territory in a hurry with their cheap temples and libraries.

Not a bad civ. . .not my favorite. But a decent civ.

Hmm. . . I may have to revisit them again. It has been a while since I've played them.

What is UU ?
@Longasc: how could I keep the Celts in Vanilla ?

Unique Unit.

The combination of religious and scientific makes Babylon a cultural monster, which is precisely why I think China should also have had those traits. I mean how else would you characterize China's relationship with the rest of Asia?

I too share a fondness for the Ottomans, but that's mostly because I haven't purchased C3C yet. I'll probably wait for the official patch.

Hi Zardnaar - no cheap granaries for agricultural Civs?

I just tested it - you are right. The encyclopedia says they get them cheaper...

You may now pay reparations to the Celts, I am no longer interested in any Civs with the Agricultural trait. ;)

The sgricultural trait is still very powerful and has nice synergy with Expansionistic, Religeous, and Indstrial traits although it seems to work with all of them.

I think a lot of players liked Babylon in vanilla, but in C3C its value has been downgraded by (1) the much more time-consuming nature of the tech lines (2) the introduction of ToA (3) the fast growth of agro civs (see Superslug's latest HoF offering) (4) the seemingly considerably worse odds of popping a tech from goody huts. In vanilla, a standard trick with Babylon was study mysticm, build warrior, warrior, temple, hope that the warriors pop all the tech you need and you are well on your way to a culture victory, especially if you can build libraries before 10bc. You now have to be very lucky for this to work in C3C

On the issue of the UU, IMO the problem is not the power, in percentage terms it is quite an upgrade, but the fact that you end up with a ludicrously early GA (assuming that you are using the UU to take out cities defended with warriors) The upgrade line is also dubious, but that's not unusual with UUs.

How come the Babylonians in real life did not survive the ancient ear if they are so good?

What happened to Babylon rather depends on whether you read the Old Testament or the New one. In the Old Testament, Babylon becomes corrupt, wastes too much money on entertainment, not enough on the military, gets caught up in a three-way Sid-level dogpile with the Medes and the Persians and is destroyed.

In Revelations, though, Babylon is this all-powerful state and God has to downgrade its status, a sort of Firaxis patch.

Either will do, but I think the Revelations version is remarkably close to a culture-victorious vanilla Civ III Babylon. For instance

1. Babylon would be an END TIME GREAT NATION (Rev 17,18; Isa 13:6).
2. Babylon would have a huge seaport city within its borders (Rev 18:17).

Okay I understand that Babylon was destroyed because Nebuchadnezzar disbelieved in the Hebrew creator .Because he took the Jews as slaves when he captured Jerusalem and deemed himself a god on earth.

So through Cyrus the great, a Persian, the creator decided to end the Babylonian empire once and for all.

*If only the babylonians were God fearing people, they wouod be here today*
