England's green and pleasant land.
I've searched the forums for an answer to this, with no luck. Ever since Civ3, the Bowman has made a horrendous noise when firing - much louder than the game settings. I find it difficult to believe that it's not been fixed in a patch since then, yet here I am getting the same thing with Conquests. Enlighten me please somebody!

On occasion I have had unit's make bad sqeaking sound's when they attack mainly knights.Sound's like those cartoon chipmonks. When it happen's it effect's that civ's unit until the end of the game.

I've had this happen as well... sometimes the sounds will be too low a pitch or too high. This seems to happen with Longbowmen especially, but also with Knights and Workers (it's kind of unsettling hearing the non-slave worker start a forest chop at a low frequency... sounds kinda like he's saying "doh!"). Something is amiss with Civ3's sound engine, that's for sure. It may not be a sound driver problem.

I experienced the same with a Frigate, I startet bombarding and suddenly all hell broke loose! I had the same experience on both my Desktop PC and Notebook, so it is probably really a Civ3-sound issue and not depending on the drivers.

there's one unit, maybe a chariot that makes a beep noise at the end, always turn my head and wonder where the sound comes from, sounds mobile phone / electronic warningish

I've heard the longbowmen make a loud noise when attacking as well. I usually just turn the sound off and listen to the radio, though. I think it's just a minor flaw in the way the game operates... no big deal.

It's the 21st century. ;)

Go to start->run, and type in dxdiag. You can save the report as a text file. Copy that info, and paste it here, or, just write down what you see (i.e., what type of sound card you have). What version of Civ3 are you using, too?

This might be a sound they programed into the game. Go to the CivEditor, and go to the save folder. Go to the sounds folder. Right click and select the open button. You shall find the noises each unit makes. Look for the bowmen folder, (right click, open button) and open the folder. Then listen to the bowmen attack sounds. :)

The Bowman sound is indeed quite a bit louder than most other sounds, so it's not your computer. I think it's annoying as well.

One thing you can do is replace the line in the Bowman .ini file (the one that tells the unit which attack noise to use) with the one in the Archer .ini file.

I also don't like the knight noise. I assume it's supposed to be the "whine" of the sword slicing through the air, but it sounds like a little girl whimpering.

Some of the ships are pretty loud too.

That is the Egyptian War Chariot. He-he... And it sounds like receiving a new
message on the cell phone. I had to check my phone the first times that happened.

OK, I've done as you suggest. This is what I got:

Damn, I'm being told to shorten the post to 15000 characters. OK, plan 'B'. Where do I look to find what type of sound card I have? BTW, I'm using 'Conquests', but the problem occurs with Vanilla & PTW too.

upload the file rather than inserting it inline :)

Sometimes for me the warrior sounds really weird when moving, usually when I load a game and still have a few warriors running around. Anyone know why?
