I recently started a game with a pretty lousy area. My capitol had it pretty nice. On a river with 3 bonus grasslands and a Wheat flood plain. Further exploration revealed a vast jungle to my west and north, a large desert to my southwest and an ocean to my east. A vast grassland started to my southeast but was 6 turns away. The other side of this grassland ended about 18 turns travel time. I set my capitol to settler factory mode and rushed as many settlers to the far edge of the grassland (to prevent the Babs and Zulu from establishing the area for themselves) and backfilled back to my capitol. Now I'm ready to flood into the Bab and Zulu lands - both of which lack iron

I would like to hear what early difficulties you've been challenged with and how you dealt with it.

Played MP world map, and I got stuck in South Africa with nothing but Carthage between me and the promissed land...lots of workers to clean out the congo, and I had to make a deal with Joan (in Austrailia) to get the Iron I needed in order to wage war.

Can you imagine taking it in the shorts from Joan of Arc:o
