Barbarian technology

Don't know if there are direct ways ( i.e. stealing, trading or giving them via events ). But for sure you can edit Barbarian techs from the beginning of the game. There was a program in Civfanatics Download section ( can't rememeber the name, sorry :( ). Try to search here.:egypt:

Barbarians do research techs, because every once in a while you'll get a message box saying they discovered such and such. Even so, it really doesn't have any effect on the barbarian tribe. When they control a city, they never build city improvements and are limited to building the type of unit that captured a city.

Now I must ask.
Eternal, why are you concerned about barbarian techs?

Thanks for the help.

I need the information because I'm using Barbarians in a modern-age Illuminati scenario and I would like them to have the modern city graphics. It's not really necessary, just a aesthetic thing really.

Its easier if you work around this. The barbs wil always have the city style of the first tribe to play. So you can give this tribe the industrial or modern city style (via ascribing Ind, or E2 and Aut to them), and the barbs will keep the old citystyle. Additionally, if you make these techs no,no techs things will stay in place (unless you need other tribes to get the industrial/modern styles during the game, in which case this won't be a good idea)

If you want to work around giving city styles etc after you begun building the scenario, you can use CivTweak, a smart little util made by Carl Fritz (available in the dl's of this site)

Even better the barbs allways use the city style of the first civ in the rules (romans) regardless of if they are in your scenario or not. (!)
So all you need to do is not include the Roman tribe and set thier city style to the one you want the barbs to have (editing the cities.gif to get that style to look modern would probably be wise in your case as well ;))

The barbs also use the roman leader pics, and such when negotiating (yes I have once or twice been able to negotiate with barbs in a scenario of mine, they only contact you to boast about new techs they discover though:()

It should also be noted that while barbs does research techs they lose the tech they just got imidietly after aquiring it, im not sure if it is possible to make them keep them via hexediting, but if you give them tech in a normal game (or scenario), they will lose it imidietly afterwards.

I agree with this. My own attempts at hex editing the barbarian tech block confirm this.

If you want the barbarians to have a particular city style, paste it into the bronze age slot (first slot) of the city.gif. Make sure that the first tribe uses that slot for its pre-industrial city style. You do that in the rules.txt @leader section. Then make sure tribe 1 is in the modern (electronics, automobile techs) or industrial age(industrialism tech). That should do it.

I maintain what I stated above:
You don't need to care for tribe ones cities, the barbarian city style is totaly unrelated to it, the barbarian civ only cares about what the romans (ei. the first civ in the rules.txt) in the rules.txt has :) :p
So what you need to do is make sure that you don't have the civ in the roman slot as your first tribe of the seven in the game, celts and russians (or whatever replaces them) can have another one of the "ancient styles" than the barbarians has.

Hence, it doesnt matter wheter the first civ in the game has industrialization/automobile-electronics.
