If you capture a settlement you can take the offer to raze it immediately. However if you choose to accept it you cannot abandon it later, nor can you destroy any of your own settlements yourself. However there are still two ways of getting rid of unwanted colonies.
The easiest way is to gift the colony to another European power. This option is available for most smaller colonies or those you have captured, but not for your main core colonies.
The other method is to annoy the local tribe and then leave your colony undefended. This does work most of the time but sometimes the indians stubbornly refuse to attack on the one occasion you want them too.
