Beating Up Europeans?

Hi everybody! I've been away since I got sick of regular Civ4, I love the new Colonization!
However, one of the things bugging me is: it's just too easy to beat up the early European colonies! You hop next to his pioneer, capture it, then capture his town. Simple! Too simple, eh?
You can often do this to all three powers, with no bad effects (they make peace rather easily).
Is this more of a bug or an exploit than a strategy? I think so.
Are there mods or upcomming patches to address this? idk, I just got here :)

Anyhow, there ought to be a fix for this, it's like most exploits - you can't just say (to yourself) "oh if you don't like it don't play that way" because it's just too hard the honest way.

When you finally get a nice map, and build up a nice colony, you're left wondering "how much better would things be if I'd only sacked Quebec on turn 5?" Haunting question, that.

Comments appreciated!

I've played a couple of games using Drakan's "Guide to Win on Revolutionary.- The Spanish Conquistadors" which starts by eradicating the other Europeans, then re-eradicating them as needed. It certainly puts them out of the game and prevents them from stealing "your" FFs or declaring independence at an inopportune moment.

However, you don't get much military experience that way as they die too easily. Yes, you can then go hunting natives, but I'm toying with the idea of letting a European get established and *then* go crush him.

We'll ignore that recent disaster when the Spanish set up shop precisely *two* tiles away from New Hoboken while the French bracketed me 3 or 4 tiles away. I decided that I needed Lebensraum (what's the Dutch word for that?) so I whipped up three Dragoons, crushed the Spanish...and was promptly exterminated by the EIGHT armed braves from the village beyond the Spanish. Embarassing since I had sold them those guns...

Thanks for the comments guys!
Yeah it's awful when they grab Peter Minute (sp?) which essentially wrecks your game.
I've played letting the Euros alone, one will usually anger some natives and get exterminated, the others grow very veeery slowly. Of course I'm still playing mid-level games. Play on Revolution level? I think not!
Even letting your scouts pick off a few Hardy Pioneers (thanks France!) seems like a cheat, since there's literally zero negative consiquences for doing it.
Every game where they've started a revolution, the King's Men have made mincemeat out of them.
Ah well, it's still a great game!
I don't worry too much about having experienced troops for revolution, getting 2 free dudes per town = Dragoon Artillery Fodder! Sure good troops are nice and all, but even they can die at a 90% attack, eh? I put Generals in them and make them medics (triple surgeons) :)

To fix the most blatant exploit of this, the patchmod 1.07 doesn't allow you to declare war in the first 20 turns, this gives the europeans a chance to settle. Europeans also get more cash IIRC.

Give it a try, then if you still fancy European bashing its still an option, but they get a bit of a head start :)

I didn't have any trouble bashing them using PatchMod, but I did supplement my original Vet with some other dragoons.

Hermann's advice about no Liberty Bells is a good one. The King does raise taxes and such far less, esp the REF troop buildup, with no LB's being generated.
I did have one game where I was beating up a Euro later on, around 1590, and the King jacked my tax rate 4 times in 20 turns! I made peace and the hikes slowed to normal. Coincidance? Oh it's possible, just seemed weird.
Otherwise I've got a query about Treasure Gold, in another thread.

IIRC in the old Col, the relationships between the europeans realms (i.e. roughly war and peace) had an impact on the colonies.

I've seen nothing like that in Col2 so far or am I mistaken ?

You are right, unfortunately. That aspect of the game was removed for some reason.

Ya know, I've been havin' a leetle trouble wit' dem furriners.

In several games I've been playing the Bully Conquistadors with intent to eradicate the early opposing colonies. As a result the second Spanish town is usually named Quebec, but there have been a few glitches, especially on sprawling continents. In those cases sometimes those colonies get well established (i.e. well defended) by the time I find them. Also, sometimes I attack and destroy or damage a town only to have bands of armed natives coming to the aid of my enemy.

On one occasion the Brits built Jamestown into a Size 8+ town before I found it, so I planned to send over a galleon full of dragoons...until a scout noticed a privateer off that coast. Rather than take that 50/50 shot I waited until I had a frigate for escort. That put paid to the privateer(s), but by then the Brits had multiple Size 12 towns so I sent 9 dragoons and a cannon. Landed next to Jamestown and took it...at which point the Ship-of-the-Line showed up. OOPS. Like Napoleon's expedition to Egypt my SEF (Spanish Expeditionary Force) was cut off without a way to reinforce or extract them. I took five English towns, but lost the bulk of my experienced troops. C'est la guerre.

That's historically accurate, Hermann !

You weren't expecting the Royal Navy to give up naval domination that easily, weren't you ?

It was my Aboukir Bay.

Actually I "saved" the frigate and the galleon as the AI in its infinite wisdom decided to sink my merchantman and then didn't pursue the lumbering galleon. Then I managed to win my WoI before John Adams won (or lost) his.
