I seem to get blasted about being a warmonger by all the civs in most of my games. (I do like to conquer entire civs to get the history points.) Is that my problem? Should I leave an impotent city or two in the civ whose capital and next best city I have taken? What's the point where conquering begats trouble in the extreme for the balance of the game? What about conquering a second or third civ? Should I wait so many turns (say, 50 or so) before I start going after the next civ? How long does it take to get over "warmonger" charge? What can I do to speed that up? Does gifting really work? Can I be a warmonger on one continent and a friend with alliances on a different one?
No, just kill everyone. If the AI was a bit more competent, and could wage successful offensive wars, it would be a good mechanic.
As it stands, the warmonger penalty just encourages you to warmonger even more. If you can't trade with your neighbors because they hate you, you may as well smash them with your existing army.
The intention is in the ancient age you just attack and kill as much as possible. Even the classical is a few points of warmonger per city unless you declare a surprise war. It is the later eras that kill you for warmonger.
But as stated... it does not really matter
1. Poor Scouting
I seem to give up on scouting after meeting a few Civs.
I tend not to find the Capitals or all the neighboring cities.
This becomes a problem for faster finishing.
Many times I take too many cities instead of just the Capital on my way to the next Civ.
If I have scouted poorly my Army/Armies take too many turns in wrong directions.
This becomes a problem and can make my Army much less effective.
2. Strength of Army
Sometimes I rush in too fast.
Sometimes I do not bring enough troops.
Sometimes I am not advanced enough.
Sometimes I run into Walls or Modifiers.
All of this will either Stalemate or end in a Retreat.
Poor Scouting can cause me to make mistakes like this again.
Solutions can be to bring a Great General, bring a Larger Army and pick on the Weaker Opponent.
Many times I have 1 Horse but by the time I have a Great General, Knights are coming online.
It seems I just use the Horses to make money.
3. Builder Mode
At times I will get lost in builder mode.
This can cause major problems not being Optimal with build orders.
Better for Peaceful Play.
4. Speed
Speed Kills or Lack of Speed will get You Killed.
Turn times can be everything.
The faster the better.
Decided to roll a game as Noway.
Decided to share this game because it seemed above average for Norway.
Perhaps, more of an "easy/fun" map/start compared to others.
Settings: Deity
Standard Map

SpoilerTurn 1 :
I saved the turn 1 file since some members here requested I do so in the future.
I played up to Turn 80 and saved the game.
I noticed a good number of huts around.
I popped a very early scout which is nice.
Made plenty of mistakes but able to shave off some turns compared to most of my games.
Horrible Mistake where I let a CS take a City and Raze it.
I got trolled by the combat health screen.
SpoilerInitial Thoughts :
I didn't like the initial start so I moved.
Decided to settle on the Tobacco.
Not a ton of chops but plenty of Hills and 1 Horse.
Plenty of room to expand... NW nearby.
Science CS close by along with a Faith CS.
Land was easier to scout.
No Barb Trouble.
SpoilerBuild Order :
Builder
Monument
Gold Buy Settler
Settler
Stole Persian Settler (Around T25 or so)
Gold Buy Slinger (Barb Sneak Attack)
Slinger
SpoilerTech/Civic Order :
Animal Husbandry
Pottery
Irrigation
Writing
Mining
Bronze Working
Civics as usual moved around till boosted.
Beeline Political Philosophy (T51)
SpoilerTurn 28 Harvest :
Surprised I got this.
I wasn't trying and missed I had faith from a CS.
Happy to get the Pantheon this early and Harvest.
Harvest Pantheon Cheating??
Perhaps but so is using production overflow which I do.
SpoilerTurn 49 Golden Age :
Looking at my Settles perhaps I should of moved Forward Faster.
I was trying to settle the Dead Sea but a Barb gave me trouble.
Had to wait for 3rd city.
4th city I just went right to the luxury for quick sale.
SpoilerTurn 80 :
Surprise War (Moderate) to steal a Settler.
Planning Colosseum in Capital but probably better elsewhere.
Trying to focus on Faster Domination play but still having issues.
Most likely building other things that are not optimal for the Just Cause.
Looking back I should of taken Geneva.
Promote Troops and now I don't want to waste the time or upset Kahn.
SpoilerTurn 93 Colosseum :
Idiot Play and I let Tushpa get razed.
Not in great shape attacking Pasargadae but perhaps I won't lose too many troops.
Kahn has made Persia pretty weak for most of the game anyway.
2 Cities left I think.
A quick update and finish of the Norway Game.
I made plenty of mistakes and still have to work on my game to get under a 150 Turn DV.
Accidentally DOFed a Civ which cost me plenty of turns.
I play No Reload/Replay Rules unless a crash.
Misclicks just mean I need to play slower.
On a positive note, I concentrated on scouting to open up the whole map.
Found all cities and capitals.
This is something I need to focus on more.
It certainly helps to snipe capitals instead of just wiping out all cities.
Using the logistics card?
Never have.
Read some players talking about it but for some reason it did not compute.
After you asking the question, the light bulb kinda went on!
Pillaging farms?
As many as I can.
I try to get everyone healed before taking the city if extra farms.
I have done this but probably not as Optimal.
Using 2 or 3 armies?
Getting better at it but I have always struggled in all versions of Civ.
Building too many buildings instead of just focusing on Army.
Building buildings that aren't needed... bad habit.
Got to keep working on that mindset.
Using Military Engineers?
This is something I bypass all the time.
Must be something I am missing.
I used to use them for Missile Silos only.
What do you use them for and how does it speed things up?
the main issue is you do not want to replace the 1GPT maintenance cost but when you consider it will shave a few turns off your victory and pillaging one set of horses will pay for a few turns by itself....
I missed it for a while.... as long as you have scouted well, I tend to try to get an engineer ahead of the attack force... a road over a couple of wooded hills can make a big difference.... a road over a river ?
Also an additional RAM can help
