Pretending doesn't cut it and your answers are all wrong. You want to research at minimum for a second level tech and trade for the rest.

If commercial I go for min research writing.

If not I tend to go 100% pottery (usually 14 turns on a standard map with a river), then I go for a second level tech at min.

When you start the game, check the space-race F-key to see who your opponents are. Research what they're least likely to research, as they will definitely beat you to anything they go for. IW is partcularly popular, so probably not a good bet. The best bet for a second-level tech under most circumstances is mathematics. The exception to all this, as Anarres noted, is pottery. You can research this very quickly if you max out, and then trade (if necessary) for the prerequisites for math. If you start with alphabet and masonry, though, going straight for math is your best bet.

Yes that is what I always start with but only when I'm Carthage or France (Commercial/Industrious) and go to Currency. But whn Im someone like Scandinavia (Expansionitic and Mil.) and start with none of which goes to second level Math, I dont know whci to go with... :confused:

But you made a good point on the Space Race thing... i never knew that :D

What's the point of random civ's if your just going to know them form the start via the space race.

Pottery@max.. Especially when you've not contacted anyone yet. It's a cheap and very usefull tech. Once you've met AI civ's it's cheaper to just buy your way in the techtree.

amirsan, when you have pottery and no access to second level techs just set it to 0%. I often do this if I get left behind and know that I am likely to buy/trade/goody hut all available techs within the 40 turn limit.

Bronze Working. It allows you to build spearmen and opens you a way to Currency.

I suggest you look at the tech tree again Tarwoch. ;)

@tarwoch:
IIRC it's:
Bronze working - Iron working - Construction

and

Alphabet - Mathematics - Currency

I always go for either pottery at max or a second level tech at minimum....
