I am currently using Spyware Terminator which is good, maybe too good. it auto-denies i.e. when installing Civ 5 and other games/programs. So I was thinking of getting one that is as good but don't auto block when installing games et cetera. I was thinking of Norton. But is Norton as good as it used to be? I want the best, it doesn't matter if it is free or not. I have been reading rewievs in computer magazines, but don't trust them. I think those magazines are paid off to let a certain program win.

hopefully I have put this tread right :-)

thanks

I'd rather consider it a tech support problem ;). Moderator Action: Thread moved.

There should definitely be somewhere options to ad exceptions to the list of programs in your AV program...i guess they might be hidden.

If you really want to test another AV software, you'd better try first the free ones:
- Avira Antivir
- AVG Antivirus
- Avast! Antivirus

Should be mentioned that Civ5 had some problems with the last one, so better try first the others.

what about Vipre or McAfee? I have heard Kaspersky is the best (but it's not free anymore), but I used a free version a few years ago and my games had problems with it.

I already told you; you DO NOT need a paid AV. Sure it might make you feel 'safer', but in reality, it will mostly do nothing unless you're already 'infested', in which case you might as well use a specialized FREE program, such as Malwarebytes.

But yeah, if you REALLY think you need an AV, get a free one. They're as good as you can get. Most paid AVs just bog your computer down. Don't waste your money.

well yea, but some says it pays off to pay for it too. so I am looking up both options.

I do have Malware bytes, use it 1-2 times per week. I also noticed I have Comodo firewall, could it be that Comodo (only firewall NOT antivirus) is causing problems and might interfere with my antivirus (Spyware Terminator)?

I turned Windows' own firewall off, but is window's firewall good enough? could I unsintall Comodo firewall and only use windows firewall/defence? It's Windows 7

It does NOT pay off to pay up, trust me. I've been running Avast for about 2 years. NO problems. The AV 'detected' something only once, and then again I believe it was a false positive.

So again, don't waste your money. Just get Avira/Avast as afore-suggested. Or even Microsoft Security Essentials, if you want something that might look more 'official' to you.

you said that Avast had problems with Civ 5. edit: sorry u didn't say that, the moderator did

I pay for Avira AntiVir. It doesn't hog system resources, it has excellent definitions support, it has has great heuristics and it's German made and maintained. Unquestionably the best antivirus imo.

Agreed, but why would you pay for it in the first place is beyond me. The free version is just as good for daily everything, unless you somehow have really important stuff.

I pay for it because I want to support the developers and they charge a very reasonable price for their work.
