You can adopt 4 policies up front on Renaissance, which means you can run through Rationalism and get 2 free techs right from the start.

I think you have to be careful about this. You actually get a certain number of culture points, which you can spend the turn after you settle your first city. If (as I appear to have done once) you are silly enough to settle two cities in the same turn (because both settlers moved to find two good city locations), then you only have enough culture points for 3 policies. You really have to settle one city, finish the turn, take the four policies, and only settle your second city on the following turn.
 
Don't forget that Minutemen keep their unique promotion when they are upgraded. Having Mechanized Infantry which ignore terrain and attack multiple times each turn (with Blitz) is devastating in the late game.

I did forget that! Well, seems to me America is the best advanced start civ, they seem to be tailored for it.
