best civs

france, egypt and persia have given me a lot of success

i always lose as japan and whip butt in the ancient age with celts

Well, I always play as France or Rome, but I do really well as Russia. I usually get cavalry around 200 AD, so I rule the world by 1000. With Cossacks, I can cut that down to 850.

Russians - at high level or OCC, good for keeping up in techs.

Iroquoi - if I want to dominate a contient early in the game (the Persians are also good).

Aztecs - good for war from the very start.

Egyptians - peaceful builder

what civs do you play as/find the best?

I checked my high scores last night, and there doesn't seem to be much of a pattern. I've done well with Japan, Egypt, Rome, France, and a couple others. There were 4 countries with 2 each in my top ten, and two others.

Given the above, I would say commercial, militaristic, and religious tend to be my best, but scientific and industrious are great traits as well.

The US isn't in my top ten. Can't remember any others which are not there.

I always play random though, so my top ten scores should reflect the characteristics of civs I do well with.

I have had the most luck with the religious civs. My best games are with the Iroquois. I have also done well with the Babs, Egypts and currently the Celts. No anarchy is great and the build bonus never hurts.

Chinese, Germans, and Babylonians are my favorites (Vanilla Civ 1.29). My personal style has gone from culture victory (Babylonians) to military conquest (Chinese and Germans) - which is a lot more fun. Militaristic trait is great. I don't build Wonders anymore from scratch, I just rush them with Great Leaders (my record is 7 GL's in a single game - I average around 4). By far the best UU of the three is the Rider. The 3 movement really helps in a early Middle Ages territory push and gives you GL's (and the Golden Age) at just the right time - right when the important wonders are available. I used to like the religious trait (1 turn anarchy), but even with my warmongering style, I only change governments twice (Despotism --> Republic --> Democracy and with the City Governors managing moods, I rarely fall into Anarchy, even when fighting a long war under Democracy.

You must be more of a warrior than me. I'm not sure of my record, but it's probably closer to 5. I average 2-3 gl's/game. I usually win by diplo or space race though. I think I've only had one domination victory, and no cultural/histo/conquest wins.

In contrast, I turn Diplomacy win off (the UN is totally unfair - both for and against the human player) and have only won by space race once - in 2035! It takes a long time! I either win by Culture (Babylonians) or Domination (Germans and Chinese). Won by conquest once, but only by turning off Domination victory. That too was a long game trying to destroy every enemy city on a Standard map.

I play as Egypt, persians, or japanese. Japanese for Mil win, egypt for dip/cul/space win, and persia for either one, depending whether i am pissed off with something or not.

Any of the industrious civs. Ottomans kick *ss so badly it's almost not funny. Carthage and Greece are all but invulnerable early on . I used to be a peaceful builder but am finding warmongering far more interesting. For that reason, Í should include Iroquis and Persians.

Persia definately tops the list
China is second (dunno why...I seem to always fair well with them) :)
My third tier consists of Carthage, Rome, Greece, Iriquois, Germany, Ottomans.

Then, of course, the "cream of the crap"
England, France, Zulu, America, Mongols, Spain

I usually like any industrious civ as I like to build and work the land fast. I like the Egyptians and Persians, and you gotta love getting the immortals. I get those as quick as I can and try to drive out any other civs from my continent/area and expand.

As for other civs I like, there are the Babylonians when going for a Culture or spaceship win, and like the Japanese or Germans when going for a domination win. I really like the Germans for the Dom win because of the panzer.

Zulus are working great for me in my current game, probably just because of the map. I'm on a huge continent with 4 other civs. I expected an early war, but because of jungle, everybody was able to build 8-10 cities without walking all over each other. I managed to get TGL right before the end of ancient age and was saving cash and building a small army (10-15 swords, horses). I started a war with Germany hoping to catch 3-4 of their cities. The turn before I declared war, the Iroquois declared on Germany also. I moved a Impi down, he got attacked and won, and my Golden Age started at a PERFECT time. I was already in Republic (thanks to Great Library) and was building Forbidden Palace, Sun Tzu, Leonardo. I just missed Sistine, but used the shields to build Adam Smith. Then I got Copernicus, and I'm currently working on JS Bach and Magellan. Got a Great Leader to rush Leonardo (first time in a LONG while I've rushed a wonder with my first leader. Usually go with an army, but the war was about over, so...)..

I got my 4 cities, ended the war, and got 3 wonders built while the war was going on. One of my better starts! Virtually every core city has univ/bank and all other improvements, and it's only 1100AD!

Of course, it's impossible to say how much part the Zulu's played. I didn't get many goodie huts(2 techs and some maps), and didn't get a single settler. But I was able to see that I had lots of room to expand without war early. And with the Impi, I could start my Golden Age just about whenever I wanted by offering one up to be attacked in a good defensive location.

Can't wait to get back to this game tonight! Time to build muskets and horses, get Military Tradition, and kick some more German behind:).

Carthage Ottomans Persians Germans Greeks Koreans are my fav
