Which do you think is the best Civilization for the World Map? I thought Persia, Babylon or Russian had the best placement on the world map in the Civ 2 (the only time I was able to beat the game on Deity level was when I played as the Persians) Couple that with the fact that Persia got Industry and Science as their special abilities (last FAQ I checked) makes them a great bet for best on World Map. If you expand early and play your cards right, you should have all of the Middle East, India, most of Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, and parts of Africa and Asia. Just be opportunistic, expand in every direction your opponents aren't putting up enough pressure to stop you. With that much landmass, and cities being easier to defend than ever, you should be leading in virtually every category! I think the other best (based on position/abilities/UU) would be the Greeks, French, Americans and Russians.

I think you ought to have all the civs availble to choose. Just an opinion, but if you want it edited, let me know ;) I'll be voting for the Russians. Good room to expand, nice norhern setting.

Yeah, I should have guessed the first response would be "Why aren't all the Civs listed :)" I guess it would be more telling, I was just curious to see if the 'Other' category would eventually get more votes than any of the posted nationalities (my picks for best based on the Info Center). If you're a moderator and you see 'Other' getting a lot of votes go ahead and change it (For some reason I can't) Guess I'm not a moderator of my own poll by default?

I always thought the Chinese location was fabulous. Lots of Green plains... plenty of round button shaped things on the plains that gives a shield, long oceanic broader with fish and whales and no waste land in that pocket of a country! Which is surrounded by desert to the west and the group of mountains to the southwest.

I like India. You get that nice area of grassland to build a bunch of good cities then you are nearly surrounded by good natural defences. Then set up "Colonies' in south east asia (Indonesia, Philopeans, Australia, and hell china if the chinese or japanese aren't in it.

Intersting, now that I've found out there aren't civ specific starting spots on the World map I'm going to have to revise my statements to include just CSA and UU. In that case, I think the Greeks will be the best, Commerical/Scientific is arguably the best combo, and the Phalanx is arguably the best UU in the game. The only drawback I see is that with restless hordes you could end up getting your golden age much too early, before you even settle your first few cities.

America all the way. All you do is hold your own at the start of the game using your trades and then use your F-15s and take out everyone else! :tank:

Definitely the Chinese. The only immediate rivals are the distant Indians and island-trapped Japanese. The Chinese have a huge fertile plain and lots more lebensraum in Siberia, Indo-China and central Asia. Plus, the UU is decent and more importantly, they are best placed to get to the New World AND Australia first. Nothing beats that.;)

yes. definitely chinese. first, the land is big, and there are only two opponents nearby. so usually china can occupy large amount of fertile land without going to war.

second, the UU rules. at the beginning of the middle age, riders can take india and japanese in the 20 turns golden age. So china will have all the chinese plains, northeast asia, japan islands, indo-china, and india. another advantage is that the empire are in a short circle certered at central china (around Wuhan if you open the real map). So the corruptions are somewhat not so serious.

third, the area is rich in resources. China has monopolies in silk and spice, and has access to ivory. that's 3 out of 8 lux. also, china has plenty of the necessary strategic resources, coal, iron, horses, saltpeper.

fourth, china can expand to australia and other islands easily. usually i will build a forbidden city in australia, and the land is rich in resources.

so with a huge empire, rich resources, and productive cities, the expansion in early middle age is enough to gurantee space victory, if you didn't win otherwise. :)

with real placement has to be the aztecs.

theres no one in south america so starting in mexico you can move up to gain space and take your time expanding south. the aztces are one of the top in the game anyways, i think theiradavntage increases with real places.
not that ive played with realplaces so i could be missing a fact, but it seems liekly to me.
