So far I prefer Van der Donck. Settling on a spot where you can produce goods and focusing on that will make you lots of money, and with the extended time between tax increases you can more easily keep making a good profit without having to expand more and more. The stable markets are of course an added benefit :)

In my first few games I focused on production too much, but if you're simply rich you can buy whatever you need.

Exactly. Stuyvesant needs to have a couple of carpenters in a city to gain an appreciable benefit, while you just need to be producing goods to benefit from van der Donck.

I think it is a two man race between Adrien van der Donck and Louis de Frontenac. The Dutchman gets the edge because of the Merchantman he starts with.

van der Donck becomes more valuable with the patch installed too. Previously I didn't see much price movement with commodities (other than silver) but in my latest game as the spanish I overproduced cigars and they dropped to 1 gold.

I played a game with De Champlain today and had 7 missionaries installed. I got <SO MANY> damn converts that I couldn't get at or past 50% wanting independance.

It's a nice strategy though to get the founding fathers that boost your conversion rate even more and later on Chief Powhatan, but I could use some tips on how to actually get enough people motivated for an independance struggle :p

I picked Van der Donck for the reasons mentioned above. I play with treasures from monuments OFF most of the time. Most of the time, I like to produce and trade and the reduced frequency of tax hikes is nice for that kind of game.

Sometimes I'll defensively pick John Adams just to keep the AI from getting him if I want to focus on getting important early FF's. If the AI plays john, I've found it sometimes tough to compete with him at least early on for FF's. That 25% bonus, added to whatever bonus the AI gets on the harder levels really seems to make a difference for the AI.

Note: I primarily play AoD2.

Your global rebel sentiment is dependent on liberty bell production so employ more elder statesmen, build newspapers, and try and get those FF that enhance bell production.

I had a newspaper in every city and was running 3 colonists in the building. I only had 3 cities though and once the realisation kicked in that I couldn't get it above 30%'ish, I rushed many new colonies where I just produced enough food to run 3 statesmen.

Bleh!

I hate how you have to have like 19,000 colonies to declare independence. Though it does in a way make sense (would have just Boston have succeeded in revolution?)

There is a calculation you can use to monitor your progress towards the 50% mark:

Global rebel sentiment = bells per turn x 25 / total population

Your overall rebel sentiment will trend towards this value over time. You can add up your bells per turn from the Domestic Advisor, while your total population is 'All Units' minus 'No Profession' from your Military Advisor.

In most of my games I had two to four colonies at independence. You can take the builder's road or the minimalist's road. Build lots of colonies if that's the way you enjoy playing, or build very few if that's what you enjoy. Neither approach is required.

[My, this is pretty thoroughly thread-jacked by now!]

Jose is the best. Rush your opponents with uber experienced troops.

Not only you get a veteran soldier with 100% experience bonus, but you can get 100% extra experience bonus for being Jose.

So when others gain experience with x1, you gain x4. Who is gonna win? (^^,)

Kill'em all, home alone, easy win.

My second best is Peter, his merhcant ship can make a big difference. Bring x2 more colonists from Europe and rush your opponents. Then use his bonus to pump out ships and cannons en masse and beat the King.

OMG I am a rush freak! :D

Well, as the poll is bearing out, the Dutch leaders are the most popular. Clearly mercantile trait is a great trait, nuff said. As for the difference between the two Dutch leaders, industrious is nice for getting your colonies built up quickly, but I find the lower tax rates from charismatic more helpful overall. The combination of mercantile and charismatic make trading with Europe profitable for a long time. In particular, the combination makes a silver producing colony very profitable.

The English are (Naturally) the best for revolution. I haven't tried adams, but then again I only build up bells in the last 50-100 turns or so. I love Washington. The immigration bonus means you have specialists pouring into your cities, and if you can store 300 guns in a city with 17 population, you immediately have 16 militia soldiers.

Washington! 25 guns for a soldier is amazing. The bonus to immigration doesn't hurt either. It helps out the early game so you can snowball your economy faster. When I play, guns and horses are the limiting factor causing me to delay independence, so Washington's trait really speeds up my game. In addition, the earlier you can declare the faster you can start to produce bells and get more founding fathers.

The only negative is that you start out with 25 fewer guns.

I prefer the Dutch... If I'm looking to focus on a few BIG cities (i.e., small maps) then I prefer Van Der Donck... if I want to deal with many smaller cities (i.e., larger maps) then Stuyvesant. If I'm feeling more like a combat oriented game, then I'll pick Jose or sometimes Washington.

Looking over my results, Samuel Champlain. Fastest win and highest score. The Dutch are comfortable and popular for me but don't seem too energetic. The English are (no-pun-intended) tolerable. Never finished a game as Spanish, boring.
