I have just seen a web-page by a MPG team called Europa. They are a collection of four players who have all been at no.1 in the gaming league.

If we are to live up to our Civfanatic name, we should create somthing similar. An elite tribe, which people can only join after an examination or other initiation ritual, would be really cool. After we've collected 'the best of the best' we could go out and crucify all the other tribes.

Any names, ideas etc post them here...

Sounds cool Blitz-

What is the url of their web site?

You're referring to mp games correct?

OK.....I just read the psychology thread reply and found out that you don't play Mp blitz!

I am just so confused! If you're online and you like civ, why don't you have MP? It is the ONLY reason I got the pc version. I had played the playstation version for years, but I was sick of playing the dumb ai. It is only 20 dollars and it's easy to find! Theres no excuse! Ask somebody to get it for christmas for you if you're that hard up for cash!

While a lot of strategies that work against the ai still work in mp, there are a lot that don't. You're going to need to put A LOT of games under your belt before you can even THINK about taking on good players. I am a terrific single player, but I have had some very difficult experiences in MP so far. I thought I was good when I first started....then I got my ass handed to me by a few of the "elite".

Go out and get the game. You and Stellar Converter. With the solid strategies that I have read from both of you, I am sure we could put a good team together. Sun Tzu is good too I'm sure. If Thunder could get some time (very doubtful), I'm sure he might even be interested.

I'm not sure what 'url' means. Hopefully I'll be on multiplayer in a month or two. I look forward to a war with you, Drake.

url is the address of a site such as "www.civfanatics.com"

Let me know when you get it.......what time zone are you in? I am in US eastern time....

Time compatibility is always the hardest factor when it comes to games.......

I agree with you that Sun Tzu and Stellar are good. If I had a team, you, Sun and Stellar would be the first three I would choose.

I thought you needed a nija computer for the mp version .... would I be able to play it without getting a new computer? (currently on a very old 486, which aren't even made anymore - can use girlfriend's new computer, one of the older pentium things)

(I can afford the game, I just thought I needed a brand-new ultra-expensive computer)

Blitz

Please advise, mp is something I've wanted to do since I first heard of it about eight months ago.

I am in English GMT. But I am a serious insomniac (6 years, no cure). This is why I tend to get interested in computer games more than I should, and reading an immense amount, because all my friends/lovers tend to fall asleep after 48 hours of being awake, whereas I usually can carry on for two or three days with little erosion in my concentration.

Time is not a problem for me.

Wish I was as tough as you blitz. If I don't get atleast 7 hours a night, I am not doing so well the next day. I am a major civ addict and could play all night, but the silly work thing keeps me from doing so......and I can't play on weekends.....

I play on a fairly old pentium 2 machine. As far as the exact game requirements go, I know you can find out. I don't personally know them, but I am fairly sure that you can play on an older machine as long as you fill the memory requirements. Of course if you can afford a new computer, the game will be more enjoyable. A nice fast, RELIABLE internet connection will improve your game experience more than anything though. Theres nothing more discouraging than being in the middle of a game and having your connection terminated......not fun at all.

ok, ill get it i have windows ME though so would i be able to play it? i wouldnt want to go out and wast 20 bucks. will i need icq? what is that anyway?

URL stands for "Universal Resource Locator"

Yeah me and my friend who's awesome at Civ2 MGE, we played hmm i think 46 games and i won 38 of them.
Ok everyone I have a Pentium 133Mhz! And Civ2 MGE runs great on my PC even on a Multiplayer game!

unbelievable isn't it?
I think making a Civfanatics MP Team is a great Idea! I'm pretty sure Blitz is a Military expert, and i can Expand or Boom my Empire and Economy very quickly while keeping my military at defensive point.
How about the name is the Civfanatics.com Team
tongue.gif
kinda gives a promotion to this GREAT site! Actually it does promote the site
smile.gif

But yeah post the URL to that site so i cna take a look at it, i'd like to get a Civfanatics.com team into the league.
The longest i was awake was when i went to Europe last summer. Night before i was going i went to sleep at 4am. Got up at 8am. Boarded plane at Noon. Flew from Memphis to Detroit. 4 hour layover! Flew 12hours to Amsterdam, flew 1hour to zurich 1 1/2 bus ride from Zurich to Lucerne. I was up hmmmmm Over a day because of the time zones
Stellar you don't need ICQ. ICQ is just a communication program that allows you to talk to other ICQ members. To play MP online all you need is the Internet and a humer player and time and patience, Patience is needed to set it up.
Blitz you can play MP like a GOD with your 486mhz!

Well I used to play on my 386 with 40MHz and 8 MB RAM on Win 3.1!!! So take that. Civ 2 was the reason for my first computer upgrade. And that upgrade was a video card for my 386. It's hard to play Civ 2 with 16 colors!!!! Everything looked the same!!

But I ran on a P-100 multiplayer just fine. Network, and internet.

Now I got a P-2 233 and it still runs well. Except now I got a 28.8 connection compared to the cable connection I had with the P-100.

Probably going to upgrade to a P-2 450 with 192MB RAM. or 128MB RAM, depending on whether or not my current RAM is compatible.
The 233 isn't enough for my programming, and heavy gaming!!!

will MP work on windows ME? i wont buy it if it wont.

now come on guys, we know im the best science person
wink.gif

if we had a team, we could all do special jobs. ie: i do science and economy, blitz war, sun does war or whatever.

we cant have more than 3 players or the other teams wont have equal to us, unless there is a way to change how many civs there are.

but i need to know if MP works on ME.

I'm pretty sure he meant a 486 computer. Not a Pentium 2 or 3.

80486 or 486's were one of the chips that came along on Intels walk of fame. One of there best known early chips. Like who knows of the 8088 or 8086??? The 80186 or 186 is like never heard of. But the 486 was pretty popular. Ranging from 25 MHz in the SX category to 66 in the DX category. DX2 to 75MHz I think and then the DX4 up to 100MHz and maybe a 133MHz (A friend has one but I think it's just overclocked by the mfg to this speed! )
A Pentium is just a 80586 with a better name.
Then the P2 is a 80686 and I assume the P3 is a 80786 making the new P4's the 80886 chip.

Anyway enough of this. I better get back to work.

Requirements for Civ2 Gold says you MUST have windows95 or Newer is ME newer than Win95? Also you MUST have a processor of 486 or better with at least 33mhz
tongue.gif
kinda weak requirements eh?
Hey stellar go buy Civ2 Gold and if it doesn't work on Windows ME just return it.

this is real-world economics
wink.gif
.

can i return an opened game? i thought if yooooooou opened it you keep it. im still not in the mood to go out and waste 20$

I should be able to get on MP by the New Year then. Major problem now is my girlfriend, who hates anything to do with Civ. Still, it's worth getting the punishment of no hanky-panky if we get a good war out of it.

Sun, where do you get time for 46 games, I thought they took like a month each.?

Yeah, I've got the old 486 piece of rubbish. The last thing I want is to be half-way through a nail-biting campaign and have the damn thing collapse on me. I'll be looking in the shops for some MP technology.

I'll put the Europa site on when I'm next in college. I had a talk with the lead guy, and he seems an open and interesting bloke. Guess they can be first on the hit-list then.

I reckon we should play against each other for a couple of games, then go out and cream the best team in existence in our first triber game. Best way to make a name for ourselves... hehehe!!

If Stellar is the best scientist, then that's obviously his niche. I've read some of the science strategies and they were well beyond anything I'd consider doing. Generally I don't go in for Wonders, if I want a wonder I usually send my army out to capture it for me...

Drake can be the veteran all-rounder, me and Sun can take the battle to the enemy. We can still have a four-man team, because not all of us will be able to play at once. Anyway, Europa have got four players in their list.

Civfanatics.com is the name I like most, no harm in promoting the best Civilisation site.

Blitz

Yeah I was thinking that CivFanatics.com Tribe would promote the site. It also has a nice ring to it
tongue.gif

Blitz, My Mom who used to work at the pentagon said that the US Library of Congress would have alot of military tatics to look up. So i'm looking at their online archives right now i'll email you the site URL and some Strats in a bit. Peace!

Well obviously you can't have a 4 on 4 game, but having 4 on a team would be great, to have a back up player. Chances are, somebodys going to be tied up eventually.

No need to get ahead of ourselves though. If a team is developed, it's going to need a lot of work and practice to be decent at all. So Sc and blitz, get the game and put in some mp time and then we can talk. It will take awhile to grow accustomed to mp.

SC- I can't think of any reasons that it wont work on ME. You should be fine. You should be able to return it otherwise.

As far as I know, in a 3 on 3 game, each player will have their own civ, placed randomly on the map. It is the teamwork between the three that is difficult. Communication would be of utmost importance. Each civ must develop individually, but consciously be aware of what their teammates are doing as well............once coordinated, one civ could be used for scientific advances, another for war and another for domestic growth and currency. But this would take careful planning obviously..... I like the idea, but it's definetly something that requires dedication.

Sun- what style games do you play?

[This message has been edited by drake on November 27, 2000.]

Sun, excellent stuff, I look forward to reading what you find.

Drake, I think you have the right idea about the team. I'm glad to see that you're in this for the long-term. Some training and experience are just what we need.

I'm working on an essay at the moment which Thunderfall is going to put in the military academy. Hopefully this will stimulate some discussion for our tribe. It will be titled 'energy warfare' and is about fifty pages long, although hopefully I can shrink that and get it better organised. I'm hoping it will serve as a theoretical model for warfare in Civ which will be valid across all technology levels.

Blitz

Edit - Drake, can we send e-mails to each other during the game, or is that cheating?

[This message has been edited by Blitz on November 27, 2000.]

Technically, it does seem ridiculous that civs that have never met should be able to talk. But there definetly is no rule that forbids communication during a game. Some sort of messaging service like ICQ would be perfect to coordinate and communicate during a game.......
