sort of related- does anyone ever use conquistators to found cities? seems like a huge waste.

my vote was the Mongols btw.

I voted Sweden because I always have a couple Hakkapeliitta/GG escorting my Caroleans. Not quite as powerful as Khan/Keshick, but I like getting my UU later.

I have yet to play with Sweden in this way, but the obvious fact is (as viewed by the England/Mongolia majority) is that ranged units are nearly ALWAYS more powerful than any other unit. In actuality, I think all ranged units should be nerfed in the future, and one suggestion I have, is to make it so archers CANNOT kill units, but only weaken them to about 10 percent total damage (until gatling guns). The same would apply for the English/Mongolian UUs.

Ship of the line are just slightly stronger frigates, they do not fundamentally change combat or intercontinental warfare.

Khans and Keshiks go together like cocaine and waffles. The keshik is great but the khan can keep up, heal and increase their strength. Khans and keshiks will clear your own continent much, much faster than longbows can. Afterwards the Mongols, or any other civ for that matter, can build frigates and do the same thing as England when invading the other land mass.

Ship of the lines are equal or less than Dutch sea beggars, Ottoman zerg, or Zulu fast promo frigates which will quickly get to the three range that lets frigates bombard with impunity.

Only 4 for Shoshone? The amount of potential the pathfinder alone has should keep it in the top 3. C'mon now. It offers something no other unit provides: Free techs. It can also deal with barbarians easily with the comp. bow.

As much as I like the Huns, Korea is the uber-defender, so I'll have to go with the Hwach'a and Turtle Ship. Plus the Hwach'a is the best thing ever, IRL.

I just find that Mongolia gets its UU too early (though, I admit, at the same time as the Longbowmen). In early Medieval, I'm facing too many happiness issues to go out and warmonger, especially on Deity. Everytime I go into war as soon as I get 5 Keshiks, I run into happiness problems after conquering 2 cities.

As England, I tend to go full-scale war once I get my SOTL and my first stop is usually whichever city contains Notre Dame. Then, I enjoy absolute naval dominance for pretty much the entire game.

why so much love for Keshiks/Khans? I really hate them, well, thats probably because I dont usually warmonger/ play Mongols so they are usually an annoyance by the AI.

I went for Greece, as I like the synergy between their city state influence and that their units are exceptionally good for early barbarian hunting / camp clearing, which tends to result in lots of friendly or allied city states in the early game for a long time. Also not bad for early game wars, though obviously CB-rush has become the stronger option for that, so I prefer to do my conquering when those units become Pikemen and Knights.

Thats my favourite synergy, but I wouldn't say Greece is the strongest combination listed above. The Shoshone are the best civ there, but thats nothing to do with the synergy and everything to do with just having one really really good UU and a pretty good UA. The best synergy prize I'd say goes to either Mongols or England, but I'd say England edges them out, just because +2 movement and Ships of the Line helps win any battle with a coastline, and +1 range on longbowmen - while being awesome in itself, if we focus on the synergy - also supports the same sort of game, as they're the only garrison unit that is going to be able to shoot at +1 range Frigates, which will be the default unit of conquest for other civs.

I'd note that this whole thread has a problem though. The title and the opening post ask which has the BEST synergy, then the poll asks which is our FAVOURITE (or rather, favorite, because Americans). Completely different things.

Whoops. You're definitely right. I think it should be which is your FAVORITE, seeing as how many of these UUs do not come into play in the same era. :goodjob:

I chose Danes because I absolutely love the berserker. The main reason melee units are weak in this game are because of their lack of movement, but with the 3 movement from the berserker you can hunt down enemy ranged unit. Additionally,it comes a tech earlier then the longsword and has the amphibious promotion, making it devastating since enemies don't have crossbowman yet when you mass your berserkers, if you do it correctly. The Norwegian Ski infantry is also good, but not very good like the berserker. The problem is rifleman are just rather poor in the game in general. But nonetheless it actually follows the SAME upgrade path as the berserker, so it keeps the amphibious promotion on upgrade. This means your norwegian ski infantry will have ocmbat advantages in hills, tundras, sea, and river, making the unit work in all combat situations. The NSI also gains double movement in hills, so it is possible to hunt down ranged units like the berserker, though, as I said before, not as efficiently. All of these units work amazingly well with denmarks free pillaging bonus. Attack, pillage twice for healing, attack again. Very powerful unit combination, I'd have to say these units have the best synergy with the ua not including the bs units lik the Keshik and Camel Archer

    1. Mongolia.
    2. Huns.
    3. Sweden or Rome (hard to choose).

There's no combination in other UU's.

I did choose England, but Sweden is a close second and severely underrated. By the time you get their uu's, you can have barracks, armory, and military academy, allowing you to pump out caroleans with drill or shock 1, medic 2, and march. Very hard to kill. 4 can take a city.

    1. England. The SotL is a very strong ship, and better than the Frigate. The Longbowman is just amazing. The extra range makes it really OP

    2. Huns. The Battering Ram can basically take cities in two turns on their own. Horse Archers are really strong, especially because HORSE Archers don't need horses. Together they're almost perfect, but not better than England

    3. Spain. Not the favorite units of most people, but hear me out. The Tercio is not my personal favorite. They are stronger, but they stand out a little because they can destroy anything that's mounted. Plus, they look cool(shut up, I like the small details like the visual wonders). The Conquistador is what I love. They can settle cities. I use them as a mix, I send them out as explorers, I use them in my army, or they're my settlers. Plus, no more Barbarians killing your Settlers, the Conquistador kicks their butts

EDIT: Who voted Korea? They might be a strong civ, but they have the WORST UU's in the game in my opinion. The Hwach'a is not a siege unit. It's essentially a strong ranged unit, but it has a flaw. You still have to set up. That's just really annoying. Then comes the Turtle Ship. It's a Caravel. A bad Caravel. It basically works like an Ironclad, but it can't explore. The main purpose of the Caravel(for me) is exploring.

I feel like the Korean UU's are more or less worse versions of the unit they replace. If you disagree, tell me why

    Great read! lol

I think Korea is supposed to be more defensive than offensive, and their UUs are meant for them to remain the 'hermit' kingdom.
