Hi all,

I ran into the problem of the Beyond the Sword installation crashing at the Direct X check. After 5 hours of trying to install it and searching for fixes, I was finally able to fix it. Most of the threads I found around the internet about the problem had no answer or no one knew of a solution. Can't guarantee this will work for everyone as there seems to be a whole range of problems people are having, but here was my situation.

I installed Civ 4 and got the d3dx9_31.dll error, so I updated my DirectX to version 9c as detailed on the other thread. After that I patched regular Civ 4 and went to install Beyond the Sword. On doing so, I got the problem where the installation crashes on the DirectX check.

After exhausting all my options I finally uninstalled Civ 4. Seemed a lot of people were having problems with reinstalls so I wanted it to be a last resort. I reinstalled Civ 4 and immediately installed Beyond the Sword without opening or patching Civ 4. It got through the Direct X check successfully and then patched Civ 4 to the most recent.

I'm crossing my fingers that I won't run into anymore problems - I haven't played a game yet, but I was able to get in and navigate the menus, as well as patch BtS successfully.

Just wanted to post my fix in case someone came searching for it.

I know, it's a zombie! Kill it!

I'm raising this thread from the grave to express my gratitude. I had a craving to play Civ 4 and probably would have given it up in frustration if I hadn't found this via google. Thank you OP, for sharing your experience, and thank you Civ Fanatics, for maintaining a repository of all info Civ, even 4 year old reports of installation bug workarounds. Thank you all.
