Blank Window on Startup

I recently upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7 and attempted to reinstall Civilization 4. I downloaded the installation files from Direct2Drive and it seemed to install correctly but when I tried to start the program all I got was a blank white window with the title "Activating Product...". It does not progress past this no matter how long I leave the window open.

I'd recommend contacting d2d about this.
Is there any anit-malware program running in the background, could it just be a blocked connection by the program that tries to do the activation?

I have contacted Direct2Drive and am waiting for a response there.
In response to your second question; I have attempted running without antivirus or firewall to no avail.

when you start the program and it hangs - is there any new log created in the event viewer?

No, there is not.

this activating product thing tells me that its not so much the game itself but whatever code D2D uses as copy protection/activation scheme - and unfortunately I have no idea what that is.

Did you try running it with admin rights (right click on it and choose run as admin)?
Did you install it with admin rights?
